I have a jammed thumb and a bruised palm, do I need to seek medical attention?

Yes: The bruising is from blood that can be the result of a muscle, ligament or bone injury. A thorough medical evaluation (that will likely include x-rays) will determine whether you injured a bone (break/fracture) or soft tissue (ligament sprain or muscle tear) or both. ...Read more

Hands: From your description, two common things come to mind, one is carpal tunnel which can cause pins and needles or numbness or strange sensation in thumbs and palm of hand and first three and 1/2 fingers, but no color change (bruise look) associated. The other is Raynaud's disease which would have color change and strange sensation (frostbite like) and happens more often in women. See MD for exam. ...Read more

Jammed my thumb now it's starting to bruise around my palm near my thumb. I am able to move my thumb. Should I go see a doctor?

X-ray to be sure: Unless there is an obvious deformity you may not be able to tell the difference with the naked eye between a sprain and fracture. While a sprain is an injury to the ligaments of the ankle, and a fracture is damage to the bone; strains of muscles and tendons are also possible. In any case, common symptoms may be pain, limited strength/ motion, swelling, and/ or bruising. Have an x-ray to be sure! ...Read more

My daughter fell on her hand and bruised the palm just below the thumb. It has been numb and heavy feeling for over a week. Is this normal?

Bruise or fracture?: A bruise in that location after a fall is evidence a bone was scuffed or broken. Such injuries cause a little localized bleeding within the tissue near the bone. It may not be distorted enough that casting would be needed but could have other implications for proper care. I would have her seen. ...Read more

Strained/ miled sprain of thumb 4 years ago, and then 2 years ago sprained/ deep bruise in same hand. Still acts up sometimes, what do I do?

Be evaluated: I would have it looked at for a specific diagnosis. What you describe as a sprain to your thumb may have been more serious than that and may be causing persistent symptoms. Could radial collateral ligament be torn if I have bruising & pain at that part of thumb & below on hand, but can move thumb mostly normally?

Torn ligament: It's possible but would require significant trauma to tear a ligament. Hopefully it's just a sprain which improves in a week or so provided that you rest the wrist. Cold applications for 48 hours after the injury followed by the use of warm applications help. Also, if you can take them, anti-inflammatory medications like Advil or Aleve help reduce inflammation. For persistent pain, swelling, see MD ...Read more
