IVC filter: An ivc filter is a small metal device shaped like an umbrella without the fabric. It is placed in patients who are at risk for pulmonary embolism, but who cannot tolerate or fail treatment with blood thinners. It is placed through a catheter via the jugular vein (in the neck) or the femoral vein (in the groin) ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Not the filter: Before one gets a filter, there was already a clot. That means the vein involved will never be normal and even without filter can cause swelling usually after some time upright. The filter unless along with blood thinner actually can cause propagation of clot and more swelling of the legs.. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

The filter will also prevent blood clots from reaching the right atrium of the heart, however, this is not the main concern as the clot normally travels quickly through the heart into the pulmonary artery of lungs where it gets stuck in the narrowing pulmonary arteries. This is termed pulmonary embolism. ...Read more

Strokes=clots in brain arteries or from left atria (rarely ventricle); Most=without symptoms; occur without warning. Setup=atherosclerosis (drivers=LDL-P, HbA1c & Systolic BP not ↓↓, Large-HDL-P not ↑↑, etc as in my other answers) &/or atrial fib. ...Read more
