Talk to hematologist: Looks like your platelet count is dropping progressively and thus the chance to get a severe hemorrhage is high at this rate. I presume that you have been worked up thoroughly to rule out potential causes. Since you are not without problem, you need to work closely with your hematologist re. monitoring and treatment before something serious happens. ...Read more

Call the doctor: First thing to do is call the doctor. Maybe the dose is not large enough to suppress the autoimmune process just yet or it might be a cumulative effect that will take time. The Dexamethasone is in her system within 6 hours and has a long half life up to 54 hours. ...Read more

Yes: Flu can cause either an increase in platelet count (thrombocytosis) or decrease in platelet count (thrombocytopenia). It causes much more thrombocytopenia than thrombocytosis. Its effect on platelet count is also age-dependent. Younger people tends to get an increased platelet count by flu infection, while elderly person tends to get decreaded platelet count by flu. ...Read more

Maybe: One must question why blood tests are being done so often in a well 20 year old? Medications and certain conditions can lead to low platelets. Itp is 1 cause. An evaluation by a hematologist might be needed to determine the cause of a low platelet count. ...Read more

Number is good: But not the sole factor, other routine precautions such as stopping drugs like blood thinners, aspirin, NSAIDs, etc.., are important together with being fit for surgery anyhow. ITP: Thrombocytopenia or low platelet level can be caused by so many things such as drugs, platelet consumption by clots, infections, vitamin deficiency, cancer related etc. Your doctor has to rule out all those possibilities and ultimately to do a bone marrow biopsy to eval bone marrow. Symptom: Most of the time itp patients are asymptomatic and the only abnormality they have is the low platelet level on their blood counts.
