What causes swollen ankles ("cankles") after labour? Didn't get swelling during pregnancy, only after.
Labour type?: How did you deliver? Cesarean? Vaginal deliver? It may play a role sometimes due to stirrups against the feet in vaginal delivery. Other than that, swelling can happen for a number of reasons but likely the stress from delivery and added weight (although not noticed during pregnancy) caused the swollen ankles.

Avoid salt: Swollen feet and ankles are common in pregnancy. As the uterus gets bigger it puts pressure on the blood vessels in the pelvis returning the blood from the legs back to the heart. This can make blood flow slower and increase swelling. Avoiding salt, drinking plenty of water, and elevating your feet can help reduce swelling. Be aware it may not go away until a few weeks after the baby is born.See 6 more doctor answers

Do not ignore: Edema can be pitting or brawny. Press around the ankle firmly - hold and release. If there is a indentation that stays around it is pitting edema. If you can not dent the flesh it is brawny edema and much harder to deal with. Support hose, elevation, sequential compression, diuretic meds and decrease in salt are a good start. If this does not work pt specialized in lymph-edema can help.See 1 more doctor answer
