Itchy Head Shampoo
I've been washing my itchy, sore, scalp with dandruff shampoos and dermarest shampoo. My scalp still itches. Why?
Can Nizoral (ketoconazole) shampoo treat itchy dry scalp? I've tried head & shoulders and jason tea tree shampoo, but the itchyness and dryness still come back.

No: Selenium-containing dandruff shampoo helps treat a mild fungus on the skin, called tinea versicolor. The shampoo doesn't get rid of ringworm on the scalp, which is a different type of tinea infection, called tinea capitis. Controlling dandruff: Dandruff (seborrhea) is common. Shampoos with zinc, salicylic acid, selenium, or coal tar are sold in many stores. Nizoral shampoo (contains anti-fungal) is also available. Doctors may also recommend cortisone or kenalog (triamcinolone) sprays. Prevent dryness (don't wash hair too often). Unbearably itchy upper body & scalp. No scabies, lice, dandruff, or allergies (tested). Rashes on hands/inner elbows/chest. Steroid cream not helping?
See Allergist: Given you unbearable itching symptoms and rash refractory to topical steroids I would suggest making an appointment to see an allergist for further workup/evaluation. Eczema, contact dermatitis, urticaria (hives), etc. are all skin condition that you could be suffering from. Getting workup up by a specialist might provide more answers/treatments. ...Read more
Fungal: Sounds like fungal and/ or yeast infestations. The facial component is called seborrhea. A topical anti-fungal like Nystatin cream might be useful. Try a selenium based shampoo wash around the genital region in the shower. Selenium is anti-dandruff, which is thought to have a fungal ("microsporum furfur") relationship. ...Read more
