Allergists: Please take your baby to see an allergist. An allergist can help identify what allergens are causing all the trouble. It may be possible to eliminate them from the baby's environment. There are a number of prescription medications that may help. And allergy shots, although young children don't like them, are also an option. ...Read more

Allegra & Claritin (loratadine): Allegra (fexofenadine) & Claritin (loratadine) (loratidine) have the advantage of long duration of action (~24 hours) and lack of sedation. Zyrtec (cetirizine) is nearly as good but 1 in 12 users get drowsy on this one. All otc antihistamines treat all symptoms of allergic noses and eyes except for stuffy nose. Buy the generic versions and get the same effect at lower cost. ...Read more

No: but you likely have a viral infection as well as an allergic reaction. There is no definite Rx for viral infections but you may try taking antihistamne or nasal steroid for the nasal and eye symptoms. ...Read more

Confirm: I would suggest a saline rinse for nose and eyes. It should be safe, but please check with your local pharmacy and OB. They have up to date computerized information. Using a HEPA filter at home and avoiding triggers will also help. ...Read more

Allergic Rhinitis: Nasal blockage and itchy eyes are not often helped by oral antihistamines. For the itchy eyes you may require an eye drop - the most effective are by prescription. For the nasal blockage which is caused by swelling due to allergic inflammation, you will need a steroid nasal spray - available by prescription only. A decongestant might help some, but not as well as the prescription nasal spray. ...Read more
