My 22 year old sister was just diagnosed with MS this summer. She noticed symptoms at 19: my age. What are the chances i may have it. She's so young?

Remote odds: Even identical twins do not share a full risk of acquiring ms, and siblings have have very low incidence indeed. So, chances are very much in your favor that this will not occur. However, if you are concerned, do this for the two of you: supplement vitamin d-3 at least 5000 units daily, do not smoke, do aerobic exercise, and use a low fat diet. For you sister, find an ms specialist in your city. ...Read more

It appears my neighbor has Asperger disorder at almost 30 years old? Can he get dangerous?

It appears my neighbor has Asperger disorder at almost 30 years old? Can he get dangerous?

Not likely: Anyone can be dangerous when provoked. A person with asperger tendencies often can not express themselves well and may act unusual, but is no more dangerous than anyone else. They are often better at controlling anger since that have had to work so hard to just tolerate the irritation of life itself. ...Read more

Hello. I was diagnosed with BRE. But I had my first and single seizure at 15 years old. Is it possible? Is this a wrong diagnose? I'm 20 years old now. What is the chance to have one more seizure? Sorry for the bad English.

Hello. I was diagnosed with BRE. But I had my first and single seizure at 15 years old. Is it possible? Is this a wrong diagnose? I'm 20 years old now. What is the chance to have one more seizure? Sorry for the bad English.

Notes about BRE: BRE is a condition that does not normally affect teenagers at onset. You might consider whether there is a different cause instead. BRE normally starts in children, and it is diagnosed by clinical history, exam, and specific EEG findings. Many people with BRE stop having seizures by the time they are teenagers. ...Read more

Im a 21 year old male . What exactly is high functioning autism? Apparently I am disgnosed with it. :( is that a bad thing?

Im a 21 year old male . What exactly is high functioning autism? Apparently I am disgnosed with it. :( is that a bad thing?

Forget the label: If you are functioning well, then i would simply forget the label. If you heading into difficulties you should seek out psychotherapy or psychiatric treatment just as anyone else would. The label at this point could only be helpful in terms of entitlements, but it sounds like you will not be needing them provided you are able to live independently. It is possible that the label no longer applies. ...Read more

I am 40 yrs old and have a problem of head/neck jerking. This has started at age of 12 yrs (i guess). Is it a tic? If so please give me a medication.

I am 40 yrs old and have a problem of head/neck jerking. This has started at age of 12 yrs (i guess). Is it a tic? If so please give me a medication.

Tic medication: Most of the time, unless the tic interferes with daily life function, the potential side effects are worse than the problem. If the problem is getting worse, you may want to see your primary care or neurologist for treatment options. They will do further testing to see what medication is best. ...Read more

Hello my 2 year girl has duane syndrome and might be an asperger. Is that two syndromes connected?

Hello my 2 year girl has duane syndrome and might be an asperger. Is that two syndromes connected?

No: I'm not aware of any literature or studies that suggest a link between Duane and Asperger's syndrome. While vision problems may interfere with 'normal' eye contact, this is not the same as the behavioral avoidance of contact with others seen in Asperger's. Be sure to address any concerns with your daughter's pediatrician. I hope this helps. ...Read more

Could I have developed depersonalization or dissociation disorder as a child? I had my first attack at age 6 and it was when my mom moved out. BPD

Could I have developed depersonalization or dissociation disorder as a child? I had my first attack at age 6 and it was when my mom moved out. BPD

Yes: Emotional trauma in childhood is very much associated w/ dissociation. In fact it is the 'mother' load for symptoms that comprise attachment and stability disorders. That said, w/ deep psychological therapy so rare now, these root issues are often (always) neglected in favor of pharma-solutions. You may find a worthy talk therapist or you might work through things in poems or art. You're worth it! ...Read more

My 4 year old child waa seen by a deveopmental specialist. Hr is developmentally delayed and weak muscle tone. What could cause this? Should I worry

Many things: The list of conditions that can cause developmental delay and hypotonia (weakness) is extensive (metabolic disorders, genetic abnormalities, trauma during delivery and more). Speak with your developmental pediatrician again to get a better idea of what they feel might be the cause. Hopefully, therapy of some sort (physical, occupational and speech) will be initiated, early intervention is key. ...Read more

Expert Assessment!: This is one question that you'd definitely want answered by an expert who could get a detailed developmental history of your son & who could assess him in person. Gaining an understanding of what's behind these behaviors sounds very important, so you know best how to help. I'd recommend consulting w/ a neuro-developmental behavior specialist - like a child neuropsychologist or child psychiatrist. ...Read more
