Trazodone: When my patients become tolerant of their sleeping pills and they stopped working for them my first choice as a go to medication is trazodone. I typically prescribed it in the 50 mg tablets and tell the patient to take one to three at bedtime. Since it is somewhat unpredictable in terms of the dose I tell the patients to start low and go slow and gradually increase the dose until they are sleeping through the night without feeling hung over the next day.
