Is there such thing as a false positive ive heard of a false negative if a test is positive its means pregnant right?
Statistics: There are few, if any, tests that are 100% accurate. We measure accuracy by considering a test sensitive or specific. A highly sensitive test rarely misses a condition (few false negatives). A highly specific test rarely mistakes another condition for the one it's testing (few false positives). Repeating the test, with a different kit, will help raise the accuracy of your finding. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is it true that the qualitative blood hCG test is as good as a urine test? It only tests positive with a 25mlu?
Probably close: The modern upt is very sensitive. 25mlu is very low, like just after implantation ( i'm not sure how long but just a couple of days. I recommend people skip the period before the upt, however. Otherwise you can be chasing it too hard causing extra stress. Pregnancy rates are about 10-20% per month; good luck with everything. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
It depends...: Both types of test have pro and cons. When there is an active, fresh outbreak less than 2-3 days in duration, culture (or even better, a PCR test for HSV DNA) is generally best. When no lesions are present, or if healing and culture or DNA is negative, blood test is the only option. However, the blood tests aren't perfect; some positive results are false, especially if only weakly positive. ...Read more
If there is a cross- reactivity during an elisa test is it possible to end up with a false negative as a result?
False positives: Cross-reactivity can cause false positives (meaning that the test is positive but the actual substance tested for isn't there). The happens when an antigen (virus, protein or bacterium) is so similar structurally that it reacts with the same antibody that the test is designed for. For example, the antibody test for latex allergy can sometimes cross react with a protein in bananas! Crazy, huh? ...Read more

It's just random: Tests miss 5-10% of infections, more by urine, less by urethral or vaginal swab. Maybe other possibilities as well. Chlamydia clears on its own in a few weeks to months, so current testing is negative. Or s/he received an antibiotic for chlamydia (and didn't admit it) or for another infection, curing chlamydia or interfering with the test. Partner(s) of infected person need Rx, even w/ neg tests. ...Read more
