Food Questions: We do not endorse products here on this app. There are probably a hundred different versions of 'low fat' cheese. I advise my patients that any product 'low fat' should be avoided since many of them use high content fructose corn syrup to thicken up the product and sugar is the enemy to health. Using the natural products in the percentage that is a healthy diet is always the best plan. ...Read more
No.: Meats have some transfats, but most are manmade. Transfats are made by hydrogenating oils, which turns them into solids (shortening). Transfats are used in processed foods b/c they last longer on shelf that way -- cookies/pie crusts/chips/popcorn/donuts/creamer/margarine. They raise LDL (bad) and lower HDL (good) cholesterol, which leads to heart disease. Saturated fats are just as bad! ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
We're asked to eat fish for lowering cholesterol, but seems even salmon, tuna, tilapia etc are itself high in cholesterol, saturated fat. Isn't it true?
Good fats & bad fats: There are good fats and bad fats just as there are good carbs and bad carbs. Your nervous system needs good fats such as those found in oily fish like salmon and tuna to work properly. These fish are high in Omega 3 essential fatty acids which help to decrease inflammation as well as lower cholesterol levels. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

As doctor have say low fat diet is not healthy does that mean i replace low fat milk with whole milk and eat butter and whole fat cheese?
Low Fat Diet: No i think your doctor did not mean to consume fatty foods but to eat a balanced diet, not one specifically trying to eliminate fats as some fats, like omega-3's are essential fatty acids and quite beneficial to consume. Focus on a plant based diet and learn more about the mediterranean diet as it is regarded as one of most balanced, healthy diets that limits many diseases from developing. ...Read more
Does eating high fat but low carb foods make you lose weight but higher cholesterol levels or is ingested fats also stored as fat in our bodies?
Fat has calories: Fatty foods are packed with calories, twice the number of carbs or proteins for the same amount of food. So high fat is not going to help you lose weight just because you are avoiding starches and sugars (carbs). Your total calorie intake needs to go down and/or your exercise up to lose weight. Start reading labels with portion size and calorie content as well as the breakdown carb/protein/fats. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Are low non-fasting triglyceride levels (46 mg/dL) concerning if my diet is actually very normal (quite a lot of carbs, full-fat dairy)?

Some fat: yes, there is fat in chicken, but significantly less than in other meats, like beef. Six ounces of chicken breast has about 6 grams of fat. Another part of the chicken (like the thigh) will have more fat. Keep in mind, that a little fat is not a bad thing. Your body needs both protein for muscles and fat (to help absorb nutrients). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Most low fat and fat free foods are high in sugar. However i'm told these are better choices when it comes to dairy. Should i eat whole or low fat?
Opinions, opinions: I don't think it will matter too much - so a big part of your answer will be which you like better. Also different brands can differ. But, i've heard from nutritionist friends that the range from whole to fat free is much smaller than the public thinks. If you have gall bladder problems or a specific reason to avoid fat, think non-dairy! otherwise, read labels & buy what you like. ...Read more

Yes: The low fat diet is helpful only if fatty foods exacerbate the symptoms. A low fat diet does nothing to prevent problems with gallstones. Assuming the food i eat is high in total fat but very low in saturated fat & i manage to burn all calories i eat.Is high fat food OK in this scenario?
Unknown: I don't think we really know the answer to this excellent question but my impression is that, if you're using all the calories you eat, the fat content is not harmful. I base this on lipid profile results of Dr. Adkins (of the Adkins' diet) who eat a low carb, high fat diet, lose weight, and have no demonstrable harm. Some fats (monounsaturated) in moderation, appear to actually be beneficial. ...Read more
