Hello.: Hello. Chest pain and tightness can occur as a physiologic response to anxiety. However with your strong family history, it would be worth it to have a comprehensive evaluation to include an ekg and blood work, if you haven't done so. Take care.

What are my dad's risks if his mother died of a heart attack at 39 (his age now) and he has extremely low cholesterol (74:42) and high BP?

What are my dad's risks if his mother died of a heart attack at 39 (his age now) and he has extremely low cholesterol (74:42) and high BP?

Hard to say: When there is heart disease at an early age that does tend to increase the risk of heart disease in offspring. That is a risk factor that you cannot modify but to work on the ones you can. This is something you can discuss with your doctor,

Someone I know in his 40s died suddenly & unexpectedly of a heart attack. I'm scared. Are these incidences really rare in healthy people?

These incidents are: Very rare in "healthy" individuals. Unfortunately you need a good definition of healthy. EKG normal, heart pumping function normal, non smoker, exercise. Etc. Discuss with your health care provider since he/she knows your health history and risk factors.

Anxiety: May be more of an issue than cardiac risk. Please have your doc check you out and when cleared a clinical psychologist can help w/anxiety management. Please remember than many people who have relatives who died of cardiac disease live long and health lives, I'm one of them.

Fan died of apparent heart attack at stadium. Was a hot day. Did heat contribute or was this man likely to die that day (or soon) no matter what?

Fan died of apparent heart attack at stadium. Was a hot day. Did heat contribute or was this man likely to die that day (or soon) no matter what?

Who knows?: We know nothing about this man, his medical history, what medications he was on, if was intoxicated by drugs or alcohol, etc. Impossible to say. He could have been dying of cancer and wanted to see one last game. Anything is possible.

If you: Have no contraindications to vigorous activity, weight training as a component of a sensible exercise program will have positive effects on your heart and the rest of your body. If you have physical limitations, consult with your doctor and/or a trainer to learn how you can exercise safely, and whether weight training is appropriate.

My dad died at age 55 of a massive heart attack. Does this mean I will have a heart attack? I'm a female age 35

My dad died at age 55 of a massive heart attack. Does this mean I will have a heart attack? I'm a female age 35

No it doesn't: While genetics can play a role in heart disease (for good or bad) this can be offset by lifestyle. We know much more about living a healthy lifestyle than our parents generation. Have a full physical with your M.D. Discuss your concerns and plot out a course that will keep you in good health well past 55.

My father died from a heart attack. How can I keep track of my heart health?

Risk assessment: A good knowledge of your risk factors (of which family history is clearly one). Knowing your status with regards to traditional factors, like cholesterol profile, diabetes, and blood pressure. Lifestyle indicators like exercise tolerance, smoking, etc. Further risk delineation might be possible with advanced screening modalities such as stress testing and coronary ct angiography might help too.

Control risk factors: Heart attack and heart failure are different. Ha can lead to hf. As you realize your risks are higher. Knowing the potential problem is the first step. Exercise (resistance and cardio), weight control, and no smoking are important. The proper diet is important. Cut out sugar and eat a balanced diet in protein complex carbs and health fats.
