Healthy diet: A healthy diet is likely to prevent ovarian systs, though there is little research to support it. Common advice is to avoid sugar and simple carbs, emphasize fruits & vegies, esp. Dark leafy greens, & minimize meats, dairy, &eggs, esp. If not organic (to avoid hormones & antibiotics in meats). Some advise an alkaline diet & foods rich in phytoestrogens. Ovarian cyst and Stress. Are they related? Any way to prevent or grow cyst? I'm on pill for that but anything other?
Contraceptioin: Ovarian cysts are very common and occur in ovulating women. Most cysts are benign and asymptomatic. When a patient has pain from recurrent cysts, it is reasonable to discuss birth control which stops the ovary from ovulating. Are there medications other than surgery to decrease the size of large benign 13 CM simple ovarian cyst or at least prevent it from getting bigger?
No: There are many reasons a 13 cm cyst needs to be removed by surgery: unknown type, rupture, torsion,... often the cyst can be removed without removing the ovary. It would be w-a-y outside standard of care (at least in the US) to "observe" this rather than remove. If it hasn't been removed for tissue, how do you really know it's benign? ...Read more
Ovarian cysts: The use of oral contraceptives offer protection from the majority of ovarian cysts, secondary to supression of hormonal activity in the pituitary gland, which makes the ovary not produce eggs, but essentially stops cyst formation as well. This should be discussed with your health care professional , as your history and family history may play a major role in the decision to use this therapy. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

However, some cysts, like dermoids, do not depend on ovulation for recurrence. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Speak with your gynecologist or primary care physician if you have further questions. ...Read more
