Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more

Is there any proof that radiation from mammograms can cause breast cancer? Is there any legitimate alternative to screen for breast cancer?
MammogramsSAVELives: The radiation exposure of a digital mammogram is 3.7mgy. This is associated with a lifetime-attributable risk of breast cancer of 1.3 cases per 100, 000. Mammography is a safe, proven technique for finding cancers well before they are palpable and there is no controversy about its use after age 50. Thermograms are 25% as sensitive as mammograms and not suitable for screening. ...Read moreSee 6 more doctor answers
None: Colon cancer grows within the lumen of the bowel until a population of invasive cells spread to serosa and then nodes. It is probably secondary to a polyoma virus. Prostate Ca which is hormonally controlled probably arises from the MMTV virus entering the Wnt-1 gene to induce transformation. This same virus effects breast Ca and men married to women with Br Ca get more prostate Ca. ...Read more
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified a possible association between breast implants and the development of anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), a very rare cancer of the immune system: The FDA believes that women with breast implants may have a very low but increased risk of developing ALCL. However, further research is needed to fully understand the relationship between ALCL and breast implants. ALCL can develop in various parts of the body, including the lymph nodes and skin. Rarely, it can develop in the breast. According to the National Cancer Institute, ALCL is diagnosed in about 1 out of 500,000 women a year in the United States — and ALCL in the breast is diagnosed in only 3 in 100 million women a year in the United States. Researchers haven't yet determined whether the surface texture of an implant could affect the risk of ALCL in the breast, or whether the association is higher depending on the type of implant — saline or silicone. Any association between breast implants and cancer is concerning. Still, it's important to keep the potential risk in perspective. If you have breast implants, the new findings aren't a call to change your treatment plan or to have your breast implants removed. Remember, the possibility of ALCL is very remote. While research continues, visit your doctor for routine medical care, and report any signs or symptoms — such as swelling, lumps or pain — promptly. If you're considering breast implants, it is important to discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor and together decide what is best for you. ...Read more

Are there any new cancer drugs for colon cancer spread to the liver? My father is very ill and needs help.
Consider new trials: If i were in your father's position, i would consider being in a research trial (if one is available) for metastatic colon cancer. None of the approved therapies for this is curative; they are all palliative. I would probably favor something with an immune-based approach rather than a cell poison, if any such trial is available. This is just a personal preference i'm voicing. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I have heard that the laser can cause skin cancer or lymphatic cancer. Is there any truth to this?
No?: In practical terms there is not. Gastric or "stomach cancer" is more common in japan, iceland, chile and costa rica were "volcanic" soil is common and diet is rich in fruit and vegetables. Colon cancer is common in societies ( like usa) were diet is poor in fiber & diet relies on more refined foods (from canned or processed food). I guess one can metastasize into the other. Exceptions do exist. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What causes breast cancer in people under 40 if there is no family history of the disease and no smoking involved?
Yes: The majority of colon cancers arise in colon polyps, which are among the most common specimens that we pathologists see.
