Is There Any Benefit From Fenugreek Children With Autism
Antenatal factors: Some syndromes cause autistic spectrum disorder & intellectual disability. Chromosomal microarrays find genetic errors in ~15% of kids with ASD. Maternal low folate (folic acid) levels at conception, rubella, "flu", obesity, advanced age & alcohol/drug use from 3 wks. Post-conception-term are some epigenetic factors that alter function, but not structure or sequence, of fetal genes & increase risk of ASD.
ASD are a spectrum of disorders of varying degrees that are characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Autism statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identify around 1 in 68 American children as ...Read more
No known cause: There is currently no known cause. A diagnosis is usually made after a psychiatrist or physician obtains a complete history and physical and bases the diagnosis on specific criteria. Often a test called the ados can provide further information in making the diagnosis.
PDD-NOS: The diagnostic and statistical manual iv-text revision defines pervasive developmental disorder as having some, but not all, of the criteria for autism. The dsm-v will combine pdd-nos, asperger's syndrome and autism into autistic disorder, so that all children " on the spectrum" may receive funding and services. Autistic disorders are neurodevelopmental, but still defined as psychiatric disorders.See 1 more doctor answer
Sometimes: Children who go on to develop autism can experience an acceleration in the growth of head circumference around 6 to 12 months of age. Not that their head was large to start with, but that it grows faster than expected. However, the overlap between this and normal head growth is so large that it is not useful information as far as diagnosing a particular person.See 1 more doctor answer
DSM-V changes: In dsm-iv, the current classification system, autism refers to a severe disorder usually evident in early childhood, whereas autism spectrum disorder involves an evolution of a range fo disorders autism, aspergers, and pdd as well as a less frequent disorder into a concepr of varying severrity of autism spectrum disorder in dsm-v. Teachers screen: Kids in PK - elementary school with the Brigance System to obtain age-equivalents in specific abilities for yearly revision of Individual Educational Plans. Child Psychologists & Neuropsychologists use standardized tests of IQ & adaptive skills at age 5 & older to diagnose Intellectual Disability, comorbid in 35-65% of kids with Autistic Spectrum Disorder & other tools to define degree of ASD.See 1 more doctor answer
Breaks the routine: Many autistic people are very comfortable in their routine and like the things the same day after day. Holidays often bring more people, different decor, more noise, different food. These changes can be very hard for the autistic patient to accept. They might with draw to the comfort of their own space or room.See 1 more doctor answer
Autistic Spectrum: Disorder is now the sole diagnosis for a neurodevelopmental disorder with deficits in reciprocal social interaction & social communication + repetitive, stereotypical movements or narrow, restricted areas of interest. Level is based on functional impairment & need for supports. Autismspeaks. Org lists signs & symptoms of each criterion at various chronological & developmental ages.
Redirection: As with most kids, trying to change what is happening at the moment by directing the child to do something different. We too often yell at kids for bad behavior, so pick your battles and save the important reprimands for major stuff. Most of the other behaviors should attempted to be changed by reinforcement of new projects or challenges.See 2 more doctor answers
Abilify (aripiprazole) for symptoms: In my experience, Abilify (aripiprazole) can often ameliorate the irritability of some children who have a diagnosis of autism. Suramin, used for years as an anti protozoan agent, has shown some promise in mice for reversing some aspects of a theoretic cause of autism and is apparently now in human clinical trials. Perhaps this is what you had in mind when asking about a new autism medication.
Uncertain: On average 1 in 110 kids will be diagnosed with autism. Military families have an average of 1 in 88 kids diagnosed with autism. This statistic comes from a website seeking resources to assist military families. It is called 'act today.' I can not find a citation for this statistic. I doubt that there is a definitive answer. Families with children with autism require special resources.See 1 more doctor answer
I think it's from: Both the delays in social development + perseverative interest in anything that's preferred. The simplistic language of pre-school shows is delivered in high-pitched, emphatic, repetitive " snippets", great for delayed echolalia. Age-appropriate shows have confusing complex language ; social interactions. Game shows have sound effects, short verbal interchange, rolling credits ; catchy music.
Unlikely: The mental impairments associated with lead toxicity are qualitatively different from the autism spectrum, so childhood exposure to these compounds while bad, would not yield autism. There is room for speculation on whether a mothers exposure to toxic substances in life could cause the genetic codon changes in her eggs that are later identified in autistic kids.
M-CHAT...: ...Is valid starting at about 18 months. The shorter version is available here: http://www. Howtolearn. Com/2012/04/the-long-the-short-of-it-autism-screening-test-goes-mini-for-maxi-time-savings/.
No/yes: Autistic kids have major behavioral problems. But this is very different from conduct disorder. Autistic kids react according to their perception of the environment. They don't comprehend what others do. That isn't a conduct problem it's a comprehension problem. Treaments are available to help these symptoms.See 3 more doctor answers
Not necessary: More than that, wholesome diet cutting overpocessed foods eg minimizing corn syrup, high sugar foods/drinks, msg, food with long list of preservatives, is always best. Heighten veggies eg hide in food. No formal studies have proven gluten free or celiac free is a general answer. Yet some people swear by it- no harm in trying for 1-2 months and see of helps. Transition foods very slowly :)See 3 more doctor answers
