Scalp is the part of the skin on the skull, deeply attached to the skull and has the hair shafts from it. Stubborn...: Unfortunately, the skin of the scalp is particularly stubborn and most of the time requires oral medication for weeks to months to clear up tinea. It is best to see you doctor or a dermatologist to MAP out a care plan, as the treatment can have side effects, especially on your liver. Wish I had better news, but you are likely wasting time and money using over-the-counter meds for this.
I have psoriasis and ringworm in my scalp what kind of medicated shampoo treatment it's recommended over the counter?
See a Dermatologist.: Psoriasis may benefit from an steroid containing lotion/solution x scalp. Ringworm will require antifungals (against tinea) these too are very difficult to cure and I believe there is no good treatment over the counter. Nizoral shampoo is good for dandruff and tinea versicolor but I doubt will cure psoriasis or ringworm. Best option is to see a dermatologist or a pcp who has been successful
Ringworm: You should see a doctor to be sure it is ringworm. Lots of different skin diseases can mimic ringworm. You can technically try using an antifungal shampoo. Usually scalp ringworm requires oral medication. This medication can affect your liver so you need to be monitored by a doctor. If you are pregnant you need to consult with your dr to be sure it is safe. I hope this helps.
Yes: Although not common...It certainly is not rare and can usually be identified quickly and easily.
Is it possible to get ringworm from wearing a dirty cap/beanie for a week? What are some symptoms or signs of ringworm of scalp?
Yes: Ringworm of the skin is fungal infection.Fungi that cause ringworm live and spread on the top layer of skin and on hair. They grow best in warm, moist areas, such as locker rooms and swimming pools, and in skin folds.Ringworm is contagious, spreading when skin-to-skin contact with person or animal or spread when you share things like towels, clothing, or sports apparel.
Not necessarily: Some issues with hygiene may occur but over all exposure and transference of the infection. No one is really more or less prone opportunity is a ky.
4 yr old daughter diagnosed w/ringworm of scalp, takin 125mg Lamisil (terbinafine) and using selsun blue 3% but no help. Should I take her to dermatologist?
Depends: It takes from 4-8 weeks for the meds to rid her of the germs and normal hair growth to return. If it is past that time frame, see whomwever you wish. If not, give it some time.
Lamisil, (terbinafine) etc: There are many different antifungal creams available including lotrimin, mica tin, lamisil, (terbinafine) undecalynic acid. These all work but different strains of fungus may respond better to one rather than another. Unfortunately you can tell in advance which will wor best. If it is feet, body or groin treat whole area for a minimum of 2 weeks. For resistant cases you may need prescription meds.See 1 more doctor answer
Nizoral (ketoconazole) shampoo: Nizoral (ketoconazole) shampoo 1% is available over the counter. It's an antifungal shampoo and may help some. However, 2% is prescription, and if it's really in the hair, you'll need an oral medicine too along with the Nizoral (ketoconazole) shampoo.See 1 more doctor answer
No. It will not work: Ring worm of the scalp, medically known as tinea capitis, is treated with oral anti fungal medication (usually griseofulvin) for 2-3 months. This is a prescription drug. I recommend seeing your doctor to confirm the diagnosis and to obtain the prescription. Topical therapy is not effective in the scalp.See 4 more doctor answers
I have eczema on my scalp. What are good over-the-counter treatments. Are there good medications that don't hurt my hair.
Are you sure?: Are you sure it is eczema??? Eczema elsewhere? If so, what treatment for it? No eczema treatment will hurt your hair. Use something in the shower which is good for dry skin. There are many. Body wash (Dove, Aveeno, (oatmeal) Eucerin, Cetaphil) can be used in the shower for scalp +face as well as the body. Look for a liquid cortisone. If this is not satisfactory, see a dermatologist.See 1 more doctor answer
Creams at pharmacy: Ringworm is actually a fungal infection (not a worm) of the skin. You can treat it with over the counter antifungals such as Clotrimazole cream (and there are many others). Clean the area, dry it and then apply the cream several times per day. If it persists longer than about 2 weeks, you might want to see a dermatologist for alternative applications.
The answer is....: A very long time! Untreated fungal infections of the scalp are also prone to superinfection with bacteria, which requires more intensive treatment to improve. Fungal infections of the scalp usually require several weeks of oral anti fungal medications for cure.
