Yes: Actually, yes. Forties is the common time for onset of chronic (though often silent for years or decades) or degenerative disorders, such as atherosclerosis, or inflammatory disorders like osteoarthritis. It's not the eight pounds that is alarming, but what changes in your lifestyle, or lipid panel, or potential for diabetes that is. So get yourself a thorough checkup, and stop at single digits. ...Read more

Seek other ideas: I suspect this is telogen effluvium. Male pattern baldness is very rare in women who are having even semi-normal female functions, even more rare at this age. Get with a competent dermatologist. ...Read more

Unexplained weight loss? Losing 30 pounds in a year span with no excerise or diet, is that normal? Could it be anxiety?

Yes, it could.: first, rule out physical. Depression or anxiety both have the shared symptom of unexplained and undesired weight loss or gain. Something in your system is working overtime. Of course, it can certainly be related to other health problems. If the undesired loss of weight is a function of an ongoing low-grade emotional problem, an adult may benefit from asking, "Is something 'eating away' at me?" ...Read more

What is a healthy way to gain weight for a 20 pounds underweight female adolescent that is 5 feet 3 in.?

Calorie dense foods: The addition of calorie dense foods such as nuts, whole grain pastas, raisins, whole milk, pure fruit juices, butter, avocado, and complex carbohydrates is a healthy way to add more calories to your diet. Avoid sugary foods, sodas, and chips. Although they are indeed high calorie, they do not provide appropriate nutrition and are difficult for your body to process. Good luck! ...Read more

Is there any reason why i gain weight very easily now even on a low calorie diet as about 3 to 4 years ago i would eat more & not gain weight at all??

Is there any reason why i gain weight very easily now even on a low calorie diet as about 3 to 4 years ago i would eat more & not gain weight at all??

Don't starve urself : If u don't eat too often and wait too many hours to eat the body will store what it can into lipids=fat cells because it feels it should hibernate. If u eat every 2-3 hours the body feels it needs to burn off the food. Other aspects to consider are u'r thyroid, sex hormones like estrogen or Progesterone or even testosterone-but they would also come with unusual hair in areas u may not have had. ...Read more

I am a 5"11 male weighing weighed 243 lbs, and went down to 229 without exercising or any physical activity. Is it muscle loss or fat loss?

Probably fat loss: If there is not an ongoing illness, and if a person was doing the same amount of daily activities (even if it is "no" activity) earlier compared with now, then his body is unlikely to lose muscle. If he were more active earlier, and then became bedridden due to illness, then some muscle would be loss. ...Read more

Is it bad that a 11 year old, 5 ft and 6 in, be 195 lbs, if so how can lose weight? And goal is 100 lbs if not 120 the maximum.(a girl)

195 lbs is too big: For anybody 5' 6", being 195 lbs is much too big. The solution is to stop eating more food (calories) than is needed to live. That usually means eating small amounts at set meal times and set snack times, avoiding sugars and simple starches, and avoiding sugary drinks like sodas or juices. One can aim for dropping 1 pound a week, for 1 year... Getting to 150 lbs, and then deciding what to do next. ...Read more

I'm interested in starting a 60 day juice fast. I'm healthy, but considerably over weight. Is this a safe diet? Worried about B12 and protein.

Why?: If you're overweight you don't need a short-term toxic "diet" or fast. You'll just stress your body and quickly gain back any weight you might lose - most of which will be water. Learn how to eat properly and exercise for the rest of your life. Don't get your medical information from tv, friends, or the internet. It's garbage! ...Read more
