If a high fiber diet, plenty of water and avoidance of too much dairy( they harder the stool) doesnt keep tou regular, then it's much better to take a daily laxative than to strain or not go for days. Use fiber: The ideal would be to eat your fiber in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet, as well as to increase your intake of water to help with constipation. Lots of things..: First, make sure the little guy is getting plenty of water - he should be drinking 30-40 ounces daily if stools are that hard. 8 ounces of it can be juice - apple or prune best if constipated. Make sure not overdoing the milk - 16-20 ounces max for a 1 year old who is constipated. Finally, make sure enough fiber in diet - whole grains, roughage. Careful: With taking excess fiber, as too much fiber along with inadequate fluids can make the constipation worse. Milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) and a liquid diet only until passing stool is best. Then avoiding recurrent constipation requires 80-100 oz of caffeine free, alcohol free fluid daily with no more than 25 grams of fiber daily.
