Is There A Difference Between Mirtazapine And Amitriptyline In Terms Of Effectiveness For Pain And Sleep
Is there a difference between mirtazapine and amitriptyline in terms of effectiveness for pain and sleep?
No direct answer: These are 2 different drugs. Again, there is "no better than" or "as good as". Treatment of any disorder should be individualized. I would think that Remeron (mirtazapine) is more often prescribed for sleep disorders where as Amitriptyline is more often prescribed for pain when talking about these 2 conditions specifically. ...Read more

Does elavil or tofranil help with sleep along with depression thinking of changing my remeron (mirtazapine) because still depressed and massive weight gain?
Elavil? Remeron (mirtazapine)?: Elavil (amitriptyline) and tofranil (imipramine) are both sedating antidepressants. These can also contribute to weight gain, however. It is essential to speak with your prescribing doc so you can discuss your current sxs and side effects and determine the best plan for you going forward. ...Read more

Dr gave me amitriptyline 50 mg 1 a day & gave me remeron (mirtazapine) 15mg 1day, im allergic to vistaril does remeron (mirtazapine) have that in it. And which 1 is better to use?
Different drugs: Benadryl, (diphenhydramine) Remeron &amitriptyline can all have the side effect of sedation & each is sometimes prescribed for use as as sleep aid rather than their primary clinical benefit for allergy related symptoms (Benadryl) & antidepressant (Remeron & Amitriptyline). But they are differ in how they are constructed chemically or in the way they work. You & your doctor can decide which medivine may be best. ...Read more
Would smoking a small amount of weed be safe (for nerve pain) be ok with other meds I'm taking. Amitriptyline, mirtazapine, venlafaxine?
Most likely.: While federal regulations prohibit me from recommending the use of schedule I medications such as cannabis I can tell you that there is overwhelmingly scant evidence that its consumption with the drugs that you listed would be risky. That said IF you were to consume it any option other than burning it to ingest it would be preferable: i.e. consider an edible, atomized or nebulized form. ...Read more
My Dr put me on 10mg elavil a tricylic antidepressants. I am Lexapro (escitalopram) 20mg and remeron 30.mg. I suffer from G A D.Are these o k together. Thanks?
The Mirtazapine (Remeron) is fine. Elavil (amitriptyline) oral and Lexapro or escitalopram oral both increase affecting serotonin levels in the blood. Too much serotonin is a potentially life-threatening situation. Severe signs and symptoms include high blood pressure and increased heart rate that lead to shock.
Besides remeron, (mirtazapine) what other med is good for sedation and anxiety? Trazodone gives me terrible nightmares & elavil is evil to get used to.
Buspar (buspirone) is another: Buspar (buspirone) is a non-addictive anti-anxiety medication. I was taking remeron for 2 weeks. I had terrible anger and irritability. Today the Dr gave me elavil. Should I have weaned off Lexapro (escitalopram) which I was on yr?
I am taking elavil, nuvigil, remeron, and Xanax (alprazolam) for anxiety/depression/chronic daily fatigue. The first 3 have me in a fog. Will weaning off help me?
Yes: Weaning off medication may help. Nuvigil is not usually sedating or causing "fog", the three other medications could. Discuss adjusting medication with treating physician, it is not safe to abruptly stop all of these medications. ...Read more

I was just prescribed Amitriptyline for aiding sleep and was wondering what the difference is from Ambien (zolpidem) which I used to be prescribed.
New medicine: This medicine works differently than ambien (zolpidem). For that reason, it may work better or worse for you. It can cause you to feel sleepy. It can also cause a feeling of a dry mouth or light headedness. It is used often in Neurology to prevent headaches or for nerve pain also. ...Read more

Discuss this in detail with your treating physician. There may be other antidepressants such as Lexapro (escitalopram) or clonazepam which would better help your anxiety.
In my practice, with my anxious patients, I have found excellent results with the SSRI antidepressants at solid therapeutic doses work very well. ...Read more
What are the advantages of remeron (mirtazapine) and amitryptaline in insomnia managment? Which is better? What time do them take to have effect on insomnia?
Remeron, (mirtazapine) etc: Both Remeron (mirtazapine) ; amitriptylene can be used to aid sleep. Neither is "better, " but are available for use depending on need of the particular patient. It sounds like you have a significant insomnia problem and need a full evaluation of it rather than trying to cover it up with medications. Please work with your doctor to assess and appropriately treat your sleep problem. Take care. ...Read more
Roughly equal: This kind of question is hard to answer, as it depends on the dosage of each. Mirtazepine (brand name remeron) is probably better tolerated overall, although it's well-known to cause weight gain. Amitriptyline (brand name Elavil (amitriptyline) ; others) has more dry mouth, constipation, ; orthostasis (dizziness when standing), but can be quite effective if these aren't a problem for an individual patient. ...Read more

I take trazodone for sleep make me sleep in 10 min but I don't sleep more then 5h do u think elavil (amitriptyline) make me sleep fast as trazodone and sleep longer?
Trazodone doesn't: Usually act this way. It typically takes longer to act, and puts people out longer, with a longer hang over the next morning than Elavil (amitriptyline) or other sleep aids. Elavil (amitriptyline) is another antidepressant in this class, but has a bad reputation for side effects, mostly weight gain (not so for Trazodone). Check with your MD for dosages and also for alternative sleepers... ...Read more
Not take it?: The ongoing use of Amitriptyline likely is disrupting to your sleep architecture. You could try melatonin to try to normalize your rem sleep or talk to you doctor about rozerem (ramelteon). The only other medicines that might help are for dementia or parkinson's disease. I notice you are taking Aripiprazole and mirtazpine and, these are also likely contributing to your rem disturbance. Talk to your md! ...Read more
