Is There A Cough Medicine I Can Buy My 6 Year Old That Actually Works
Dextrometorphan: If anything works otc....It is the aforementioned active ingredient. Honey has also been proven to sooth the cough receptors, but don't have high expectations! Having said that, as pediatricians, we don't like cough supressants, unless the cough interferes with resting at night. As annoying as the cough is, it's there for a reason, it protects the lungs from all the phlegm that drains postnasally. ...Read more
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
My 6 year old daughter been sick coughing and we gave her cough medicine and she went to sleep and her nose started bleeding very worried?
Bloody noses: Bloody noses are very common in children, especially during times of illness. The mucus in the nasal/sinus passage ways can be irritating and the membranes in the inside of the nose are easily damaged, thus the source of the bloody nose. Petroleum jelly placed on the inside of each nostril 1-2x daily and frequent use of saline nasal mist to aide in thinning mucus secretions would be recommended. ...Read more
My 4 year old took zarbees nightime cough medicine and threw it up as doon as I gave it to her. Itsbthe only thing helping her cough ca I give again?
Yes: Shouldn't be a problem of overdosingGet a more detailed answer ›
Consider "none": These used to be given out routinely as prescription meds before they became over the counter. Now we don't recommend them at all under 6 if at all. So many kids ended up in ER's with overdoses that they took a look at the benefit/risk analysis. If you just want to be doing something, it can be done, but studies show no true benefit under 6. ...Read more
Cold preparations: Over the counter cold medicines do not reduce symptoms enough to risk the side effects including changes in heart rate and blood pressure. Try humidifier, lots of liquids (chicken soup!) and ice pops. And see your doctor if he is very uncomfortable. Best of luck and get well soon! ...Read more
Should my daughter cough medicine or none? My 12 year old daughter has a cough that won't go away. What kind of medicine should she take?
Cough can be tough since there aren't really any good cough suppressant medications available. Since she is 12, you could safely try an over the counter cough medicine, but I listed below how I treat a cough in my house. There are a few things you can do to treat a cough caused by an upper respiratory virus.
- drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated
- hot tea with honey and lemon
- or just a spoon-full of honey - honey has been shown to be as effective a cough suppressant as many over the counter medications
- inhale steam from a shower or cool mist from a vaporizer
- Acetaminophen and/or Ibuprofen can help with inflammation and throat pain
cough from a cold virus should improve after a week to 10 days. If it does not, of if she gets worse or has any difficulty breathing, call her doctor. ...Read more

My 2 year old daughter has a chesty cough, due to having a cold I would like to know what cough medicine I can give her.
No cough meds: There are NO GOOD cough medicines for toddlers. The studies very clearly show they don't work and have undesirable side effects. Try some honey in tea, warm showers and a humidifier. However, if the child is feeling bad because of fever, then acetaminophen and ibuprofen work equally as well. Cough medicines are really just a waste of money when it comes to the under 6 age group. ...Read more
I have a two year old son who weighs 26 lbs. He has a cough that keeps him from falling asleep. Is there cough medicine I could give him and how much?
Honey or codeine.: We prefer not to give cough suppressants to children that young. Often a teaspoon of honey will soothe the throat so that the cough is better. If the cough occurs hours after the child is asleep and especially if it is so severe that it induces vomiting then I would be concerned about cough variant asthma and would have the child checked by your doctor. ...Read more
My 4 year old has pneumonia and his coughing interrupts his sleep. Should he take cough medicine or will that make his infection worse?
It won't help much: Cough is the body's way to remove material from the airway. With pneumonia, cough is a common symptom as the body is trying to clear the infection out of the lungs. While the cough is annoying and disrupts sleep, it is also necessary to get better. Humidity, increasing fluids, and sleeping with the head and chest elevated are safe treatments that can be tried. I hope he gets better soon. ...Read more

My Baby is 1 year old. Is it safe to give him salbutamol for cough without consulting his pedia. That was his cough medicine before. Thanks?
Talk to pediatrician: Never administer any drug to a child without the expressed and learned opinion of your pediatrician. We don't know if the old bottle of cough medicine you have on-hand has expired, if its the right drug for your child's current condition, nor can we calculate appropriate weight-based dosing (I'm sure the child has grown since he was a baby). ...Read more

My 92 year old mother has a productive cough. Should she take cough medicine? Usually her cough is dry but feels she is coming down with a cold.
Yes: Most pts. May benefit from over the counter anti-cough medicines like guaiphenesín with dextrometorphan unless they have had an indesirable efect before. Codeína is stronger but it will dry the secretions causing mucus plugs interfering with air movement. At her age pneumonias are common and deadly so she must be followed closely ...Read more
Can my 4 year old take cough medicine and tamiflu (oseltamivir) at the same time? Positive influenza test 4 days ago, lingering cough, fever free 48 hours. Contagious?
Yes, most: Over-the-counter children's cough medications can be taken with Tamiflu, (oseltamivir) but the cough medication may not have any added benefit and will not shorten the course. If he/she is still coughing, I would consider him/her to still be somewhat contagious through those respiratory droplets released by the cough, although one is most contagious while the fever is there ...Read more
What's a good cough medicine for my 4 year old? She has bad allergies but the zyrtec (cetirizine) isn't helping. She also ran a low fever.
Her cough: Is more than likely from her postnatal drainage. If she does have a stuffy nose and chest congestion (noisy breathing, wet cough or a rattle in her chest), you can give her Mucinex (guaifenesin) 1/2 teaspoon twice daily for 2-3 days and see if it helps. Take her in, if her condition gets worst, start wheezing, fever going up and not eating or drinking or if you are concerned! ...Read more

Time for a visit: Persistence of a severe cough for this length of time is worth a visit. There are forms of reactive airway disease that can respond to treatment if they are picked up on exam. My 5yr old son always had cold and cough. Medicine is not giving effective relief. What should I do?
Is smz-tmp 200-40/5 sus hi-t good to take for a bad cough? My daughter is 4yrs old and I need to know if I can use this as cough medicine?
No. That medication is the antibiotic Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and it is not used for cough. You should never give your child any prescription medications without discussing it with your child's doctor first, unless the doctor just gave you that medicine for the child's current illness. There really aren't any safe cough medicines available for babies, toddlers or young children. The best things you can give are a spoonful of honey to "coat the throat' (as long as the child is over 1 year old!), hot tea with honey and lemon, and lots of fluids. If your child is having any difficulty breathing, develops a fever, or seems to be getting worse instead of better, call your child's doctor.
