This organ plays a major role in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body, including glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and detoxification. It lies below the diaphragm in the abdominal-pelvic region of the abdomen. It produces bile, an alkaline compound which aids in digestion via the emulsification of ...Read more

Is there a common cause of low liver enzymes?

Is there a common cause of low liver enzymes?

Usually OK: When we talk about liver enzymes, we are usually referring to transaminases (sgot/sgpt, ast/alt). The lower limit of normal is either zero or close to zero. Therefore having a low value of one of these is not an issue. Albumin and protein can be low in malnutrition or protein-losing kidney disease. And severe malnutrition will cause everything to be very low across the board. ...Read more

37 yr male; Lyme dis, cp, untreated hbp (165/110); very elevated liver enzymes. Lipid panel ++.'trii 850, low t. ;tests ordered. What could cause?

Multiple causes: I'm not sure what you are asking. Cause what? Lyme is caused by a bacterial infection, hbp is often genetic but has many other possible causes, there are many possible causes of elevated liver enzymes (infections, alcohol, reactions to meds, toxins), high lipids usually genetic, low t also has many causes; you need a thorough evaluation and careful treatment, as this mix of problems is serious. ...Read more

I have low creatinine, high liver enzymes, low transferrin, high ferritin, low neutrophils and high lymphocytes. what could cause this combination?

I have low creatinine, high liver enzymes, low transferrin, high ferritin, low neutrophils and high lymphocytes. what could cause this combination?

Labs: Please forgive my frankness. Labs mean little in isolation. You're already carrying the diagnosis of adrneal insufficiency and Hashimoto's; I'm concerned you have Schmidt's. The iron picture concerns me for ongoing chronic inflammation somewhere, not your Hsahimoto's; low creatinine's not a worry and just how high / low your WBC's are is the key -- these fluctuate wildly from hour to hour. ...Read more

My Lab results show low white blood cell count & liver enzymes over 1000. Found out I have enlarged spleen and Cholecystitis. What could be the cause?

Liver disease: Cholesystitis doesn't usually cause a low white count, enlarged spleen and severe elevation of liver enzymes. Chronic hepatitis is suggested. It could be viral or autoimmune. A gastroenterologist should be involved in your care, and an abdominal surgeon should be consulted about the inflammation of the gall bladder which may be chronic rather than acute. ...Read more

Can cholestasis of pregnancy cause long term inflammation to common bile duct? Can hormones affect liver enzymes and itching during period?

Can cholestasis of pregnancy cause long term inflammation to common bile duct? Can hormones affect liver enzymes and itching during period?

Possibly: the itching is from the cholestasis as it causes the bike to go up and this causes the itching. The inflammation can persist, but can also resolve. External hormone use has to be processed by liver first, so they can place "pressure" on the liver, as can Tylenol, (acetaminophen) and any other medications typically. ...Read more
