Can brain damage cause als?

Can brain damage cause als?

Possibly: Recent research suggests that a history of multiple concussions increases the risk of als, but more research is needed. Fortunately, the vast majority of those with concussions will never get als. The cause of ALS is largely unknown; genetic factors play a role in some cases. Lyme disease may cause symptoms very similar to ALS ; should thus be ruled out. ...Read more

Would MRI of brain and emg being normal rule out ALS or MS 33 yr old male.

Never say never: Yes, it is quite unlikely you have either ALS or MS, considering your test results. Hasn't the person who ordered these tests for you discussed this? In medicine, few things are certain, but it is time to consider less serious causes of your symptoms. Muscle twitching is very common, and is often caused by benign conditions, such as exercise regimen changes. ...Read more

I have constant musscle legs pain all over is it possible to be ALS when all MRI brain back blood work clear my neuro says no way but I am woried?

Don't worry: Your neurologist thinks its not ALS and since this is a rare and untreatable condition worrying has no benefit. You should try finding a cause of the problem, eg disc problem in back, statin meds, poor gait/ posture, lyme disease. While getting worked up, consider a psychiatrist who might help with your irrational fears. Depression and anxiety can cause unexplained pain syndromes. ...Read more

I have constant musscle legs pain all over is it possible to be ALS when all MRI brain back blood work clear my neuro says no way but I am woried?

Unlikely.: Your symptoms are not very likely to be due to als. 23 years old would be very young for that condition. Pain is not a typical symptom of als. Besides an MRI and blood work, a test called an EMG is an important part of the work-up for als. ...Read more

Habe leg stiffness and pain had blood works spine brain MRI neuro test all clear afraid of ALS but doc said anxiety can it be caused by anx?

Possible: If all work ups have not found any underlying problems for your symptoms, it will be a good idea to get evaluated psychiatrically. The stress of being medically screened sometimes can be so overwhelming for some, that even after no diseases are found, the worry continues. Talking to a psychiatrist may be helpful. Good luck. ...Read more

Strong family history of Als. Having backache, leg weakness, dr said I have brisk reflexes. Going for more tests & brain MRI. Should I be concerned?

Well....: MRI of the brain will not be able to include or exclude ALS in you. Your doctor may be trying to see if something else could be present causing your signs and symptoms. Hereditary transmission only occurs in 10-15% of all individuals and it is vastly more prevalent in older males (>55/60 years) compared to females. I'd say the odds of your having diagnosable ALS right now is slim to none. ...Read more

I have some facial muscle weakness. Brain MRI about a year ago showed nothing. Was told it was anxiety. Could that be the only cause? I fear als.

Doubt ALS: Weak facial muscles are associated with a few hereditary muscle diseases (e.g., fsh), but can be due to problems with cranial nerves, such as facial or trigeminal, and problems outside cranial cavity may not be seen on standard brain mri. Very unlikely that you have als, but if you need more information, a facial nerve EMG might be of some value. ...Read more
