Possibly: If you are at an academic center working with pediatric GI and radiology specialists, this can be a great alternative if you just need to look. If they think biopsies are going to be needed, then won't work. However, whoever ordered the Barium enema did so for a reason & the risk-vs-benefit calculation was done based on symptoms, history, & a preliminary diagnosis. No: Colon preps are carefully studied to get the colon clean enough that the endoscopist can carefully examine the lining of your colon and not miss a polyp or tumor. Colon cleanse does not get that kind of study and may or may not work.
