Can a capsule endoscopy replace an upper endoscopy &colonoscopy for a 3 year old? Is the same prep required for the capsule endoscopy?

Possibly: If you are at an academic center working with pediatric GI and radiology specialists, this can be a great alternative if you just need to look. If they think biopsies are going to be needed, then won't work. And, unfortunately, you do need pretty much the same cleanout so you can get good images form the camera and be able to see what is really going on. Is the barium enema exam of the large intestine safe for heart patients?

Is the barium enema exam of the large intestine safe for heart patients?

Compared to what? Ca: Cancer? Any procedure or test comes with risk, so if it isn't needed, then best not to do it. However, whoever ordered the Barium enema did so for a reason & the risk-vs-benefit calculation was done based on symptoms, history, & a preliminary diagnosis. All-in-all, barium is safer than colonoscopy using Mag citrate or other laxatives that cause electrolyte problems & require sedation. Enema is OK. ...Read more

Are colonoscopy preps essentially the same thing as a colon cleanse?

Are colonoscopy preps essentially the same thing as a colon cleanse?

No: Colon preps are carefully studied to get the colon clean enough that the endoscopist can carefully examine the lining of your colon and not miss a polyp or tumor. Colon cleanse does not get that kind of study and may or may not work. If your colon does not get clean enough for a thorough then you need to do it again...Neither you nor your endoscopist will be happy about that. ...Read more

Well in terms of something going horribly wrong, as small a chance as that might be, is one safer than the other? Colonoscopy vs gastroscopy.

Both are very safe: modern colonoscopy and EGD are extremely safe. Complications are rare. Probably the most common complication is perforation, and it reportedly occurs in about one of every 1200 colonoscopies and about one every 2000 upper endoscopies. There are rare risks of bleeding and of a reaction to the sedation. Overall, they are extremely safe, and if you have a reason for needing one, don't shy away. ...Read more
