Is Taking Imodium Daily Safe
Recently learned my 17yo cousin has been taking a bottle of imodium (loperamide) (72 tabs) daily for months. What has she been doing to her body in doing this?
Imodium (loperamide): I would question the real need for Imodium (loperamide) on a daily basis here. If your gastroenterologist is following you for ibs diarrhea-type, then this may be part of the therapy plan. But I would need more context to provide more detailed direction/recommendations. Seeing a licensed gastroenterologist (if you're not already) is recommended. ...Read more

I have taken Imodium (loperamide) for 4 days and the diarrhea has stopped for the past 24 hours. Is it safe to stop taking it? Or should I continue for a while?
YES: When the gall bladder is removed, it is common to get loose stools as the body is trying to adjust to the changes. Most resolve on their own as the body adjusts. Some require antidiarrheals such as immodium. A rare few require medicine to bind the bile acids. The bile that is coming into the digestive system is what causes the loose stools. If it doesn't resolve, talk to your dr about an rx. ...Read more
Hi doctors, please I want to know if it is safe to take imodium for occasional diarrhea, along with Zoloft (200mg/day). Thank you in advance,?
Imodium isn't good: I don't recommend imodium or other meds that might stop diarrhea - because if u think about it, diarrhea is actually good. Your body is getting rid of toxins (bacteria, viruses etc) -so why stop it up? On rare occasion, such as a wedding, then I would agree. There are other ways to work with the symptoms though... such as staying at home half the day. No drug interactions to worry about w/ Zoloft ...Read more
Yes: There does not appear to be any drug=drug interactions between the two. ...Read more
Is imodium (loperamide) safe to take if I have gastritis? Throwing up all night with diahrea, can one take Imodium (loperamide) to stop the runs so one can go to hospital?
Imodium (loperamide): Normally I do not recommend imodium (loperamide) for infectious diarrhea-keeps bugs in GI longer. Likely is viral infectious gastroenteritis which usually runs the course over 12-48 hours. But must keep hydrated. If cannot hold fluids down, if having > 7 BM /day, if vomiting > 3/day then take 1/2 tab imodium (loperamide) so you can leave and go to ER or call 911 (emergency). f/u today at ER ...Read more
Givin Clindamycin for sore in ear that won't heal. Diahrrea for month now 2 weeks after stopping, imodium (loperamide) safe to take?
Unclear.: For now I would say no. The ear needs to be reevaluated but the problem with the stool is concerning. True diarrhea this long might be a complication of the antibiotics. The germ is called clostridium dificile Need to see your doctor for this as this could cause a problem taking Imodium (loperamide). Can actually rarely develop a toxic situation. ...Read more
I took imodium ad and I am very constipated. I have taken milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) and tried a suppository. No luck. Is a mineral oil enema safe to try?
? diet: Imodium (loperamide) was presumably for diarrhea. It works by blocking the normal messages that proceed from the lower brain computer to the bowel. One message orders the bowel to stop peristalsis (wave like bowel action) while the other message causes it to accelerate causing irritable bowel syndrome. Lousy diet is by far the commonest cause, particularly sugar ajnd sweeteners. ...Read more

Diarrhea: Diarrhea has multiple possibilities. Firs explore your diet. You may be lactose intolerant, have a gluten allergy, or possibly an inflammatory process. Irritable bowel is the LAST diagnosis you want to get to. See your doctor as you are doing, have your stool checked for infectious agents, such as parasites, viruses, bacteria. You may need to have a colonoscopy to look at the lining. ...Read more

I've been taking imodium (loperamide) for about two years twice a week. Will this do any harm to me?
Diarrhea: We need to know why you have diarrhea. Diarrhea is a symptom. The stool needs to be tested. It could be a bacterial infection. If there is blood in it, antidiarrhea meds should not be used. You need to know what the underlying reason and treat it. You need to see a gastroenterologist to see why this is happening. Imodium (loperamide) is ok for now, but you must see your md/ gastroenterologist & find the cause. ...Read more

Yes, you can: Ramipril and Imodium do not interact with each other. These medications can be safely taken together. A couple words about Imodium - the dose instructions say you can take up to 16 mg, with a 2 mg dose after each diarrhea episode. The drug is potent, so if it doesn’t work after a few doses, come back here for alternatives unless you’re experienced with it already and know how you respond to it. ...Read more
Usually 1-3 days: With mild, routine diarrhea, a patient can let nature clear her bowels the first day. Then medicines can be tried, such as Imodium (loperamide) for a couple of days, just to decrease the frequency of diarrhea while her body is getting rid of the problem. Drinking or eating just little bits, is helpful (not over-eating nor over-drinking). For anything more than mild symptoms, the doctor needs to evaluate. ...Read more
