A recent electrocardiogram revealed an enlarged left atrium. I'm only 25 but heart disease runs in my family. How serious of a condition is this?

Depends: There are 2 question: is the atrium truly enlarged and, if so, is there a reason for it: both can be answered with an echocardiogram. Usual reasons for left atrial enlargement are: hypertension, left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, atrial fibrillation, mitral valve disease, and atrial septal defect. The EKG is very indirect. Is thier a cure for atrial fib? Are betta blockers the only choice? Always irregular never in sinus rhythm. Have had this for most of life. Thank you

Cure: a Strong Word: There are options. Many patients maintain sinus rhythm (normal rhythm) on certain meds called antiarrhythmics of which there are many types. There are also catheter-based ablation procedures which can provide symptom relief and even elimination of fib in a relatively young man like you. Talk to a cardiac electrophysiologist about your options. ...Read more

Are women more prone to heart diseases? I read that indigestion is a symtom of heart disease and it is more prominent between women, is that true?

Are women more prone to heart diseases? I read that indigestion is a symtom of heart disease and it is more prominent between women, is that true?

No: Numbers are funny: everyone dies of something and the leading cause of death in women and men is heart disease. In all age categories, women outnumber men, so in absolute numbers, "more women die of heart disease than men". Actually premenopausal women are protected unless they smoke or have diabetes. Angina is often mistaken for indigestion by both sexes. ...Read more

Rarely, but yes: Bigeminy or trigeminy can occur in people with healthy hearts in which case they are not dangerous but can cause palpitations which can be nerve racking. Your cardioligst is the best person to advise you in managing this problem. Sometimes it occurs due to excessive use of alcohol or caffeine. Is it common for young women to have an excessively promiment main pulmonarr artery segment (left)?

Not usually: On the chest radiograph, it sometimes is easier to visualize the left main pulmonary artery than the right. This observation may make left pulmonary artery look slightly more prominent. Some congenital heart disease like valvular pulmonic stenosis can actually by altered pulmonary artery mechanics enlarge left pulmonary artery. On examination murmur would be obvious. If asymptomatic, do not worry. ...Read more

History of WPW and ablation. Now a recent EKG shows sinus brad, sinus arrhythmia and right bundle branch block. Is this a huge deal?

Wpw: The best person to answer these questions is the ekectrophysioligist who did the procedure, but sinus bradycardia depends in how low tye rate is and whether the patient has symptoms. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia is a normal variant and right bundle branch block is isolation can be a normal vriant ...Read more

I have a asd&asa with abnormal ekg (right axis deviation) >100 they say this is the asd in work overload what would cause the overload? Is it bigger?

Right axis deviation: Electrocardiographic right axis deviation which is increasing over time associated with an ASD can indicate right ventricular dilation. If the ECG is a one point in time measurement, then its reliabiltiy as a predictor of right heart enlargement is less. Discuss with your doctor. Measuring shunt with echo is an easy way to evaluate the ASD. Sometimes a TEE is needed. ...Read more
