I am currently 18 weeks pregnant, my co-worker has just been diagnosed with scabies. Can this be harmful to my unborn child? My co-worker has been having the rash for several days

Scabies: Scabies is a contagious skin infection caused by the bites of a tiny mite (insect). Scabies is usually contracted by prolonged direct skin to skin contact with another person who has scabies. A hug or handshake is usually not enough contact to catch it. It is frequently sexually transmitted in adults, but doesn't have to be. Sometimes, it is can also spread by sharing clothing, towels or sheets.

If you were to catch it, it would be annoying to you, but not harmful to your unborn baby. Even the treatment - Permethrin ointment - is a "category b" medication which means it is safe for use during pregnancy.
