Is Saltwater Swimming Bad For People With High Blood Pressure
A blood pressure reading has two numbers: a systolic blood pressure and a diastolic blood pressure. The systolic blood pressure is the maximum pressure the blood exerts on the vessels when the heart is beating. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure the blood exerts on the vessels in between heartbeats. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, begins when the systolic blood pressure remains above 140 or when the diastolic blood pressure remains above 90. Hypertension can be a result of increased blood flow through vessels or increased resistance to ...Read more

Fluid retention.: Salt causes fluid retention because the sodium is higher and it causes the serum osmolality to be higher, which brings in more water to the vessels of the body. This makes the blood pressure higher and the body must excrete more fluid to get it lower. So salt intake must be minimal. It also helps to give a diuretic as this increases urine exretion and so lowers blood pressure. ...Read more
I am currently taking meds for high blood pressure, but recently I have had cravings for salt. Why is this? Is this a bad combination?
Please Clarify: I would bet this question has a thousand different answers. There are a thousand different kinds of soups and a million different patients with different issues if they have hypertension and/ or diabetes. It is best to be specific. If your physician advises low sodium then canned soup is probably out of the question. If you have diabetes you very well may be advised to avoid carbohydrates. ...Read more

How high?: Although we consider a low resting pulse to be a good thing and viewed as an indicator of good cardiovascular health, it does not offset the affects of high blood pressure. A thorough check for potential causes (secondary causes) of high blood pressure is probably a good idea. Ekg, cardiac echo, thyroid tests, kidney function. ...Read more

Can you give me more info on a very bad coughing problem while taking the med vasotec (enalapril) for high blood pressure?
Known side effect: Vasotec (enalapril) can cause cough - and does in about 10 % of people who use it. There's often a "tickling" sensation in the throat. The only way to prove if it's due to vasotec (enalapril) is to stop it, wait til the cough subsides, and then restart vasotec (enalapril). If the cough comes right back, you know for sure. If the cough is due to vasotec (enalapril), it will never stop till you stop vasotec (enalapril). ...Read more

May be BP problem: You have symptoms that suggest a problem called autonomic insufficiency (dizzy spells, passing out, headaches). This is common in young women. Essentially the brain can misread the signals being sent by the heart and blood vessels and cause the pulse to go fast (or slow) and the blood pressure to fall making you lightheaded. A tilt table test can diagnose this problem. Talk to your md. ...Read more
