Missed Developmental Milestones (Definition)

We expect babies and children to be able to do certain things by certain ages. We know not every child is the same, and also have to take into account things like prematurity. For instance, most babies are pulling up on furniture and attempting to take a first step around their first birthday. If they get to 15-16 months and aren't doing it, we say that's a delayed ...Read more

Mychild has mild hypotonia in legs only, he is 10 months old, normal MRI and spectroscopy, delayed motor skills only, what could be the problem?

Mychild has mild hypotonia in legs only, he is 10 months old, normal MRI and spectroscopy, delayed motor skills only, what could be the problem?

Many things: If his other milestones are normal then this narrows it down a bit. We want to know details of his birth history, early life, nutrition factors, overall growth, and family history to just name a few things in order to figure this out. Is the motor skill delay progressive? (is his muscle strength WORSENING?) Or is it static? Could be many reasons at this point, these answers will guide diagnosis ...Read more

My daughter needs help with fine motor skills. Is this a sign or symptom of a learning disability?

My daughter needs help with fine motor skills. Is this a sign or symptom of a learning disability?

Not necessarily: Delay of fine motor skills in and of itself does not necessarily correlate to cognitive delay. It may be neuromuscular in nature or a developmental delay that simply requires some therapy. Important information would include delay in other milestones. Please speak with your pediatrician for further evaluation and guidance. ...Read more

20 month old has verba, social, and communication delays. Could this be signs of autism and how to differentiate ASD from aa development delay ?

Social interaction : A few things. One it's important to have a hearing test to rule out hearing impairment. A hallmark of ASD is abnormal social functioning such as preferring not to be held or cuddled. Limited eye contact or interest in conversation. ASD often also presents with delays. Delays alone, however, are less likely to have social dysfunction and are usually more specific. I hope this helps. ...Read more

My 7 month old has focal seizures, axial hypotonia and developmental delays. What could this be? Our neuro isn't sure.

Many causes, and: if your child is currently under the care of a neurologist, appropriate testing may include both imaging studies as well as blood tests for intrauterine infection, karyotyping and other DNA tests. If hypotonia is fairly acute onset and associated with lethargy and constipation, consider botulism. Sometimes cause is not found, but early intervention may be helpful. ...Read more

Could my 3 year old be autistic?he is not yet pottu trained, has speech and language delay passed his hearing test.he throws very violent tempers.

It is hard to say ..: You did not provide enough clinical information. Does this happen in all environments or does he save these behaviors for you specifically. Does he exhibit periods of time where he is engaged in activities with other children: does he understand the language you use with him, does he have a range of emotions: happy, sad, etc. You should discuss these questions with your Pediatric Specialist- KB ...Read more

Could my 3 year old be autistic?he is not yet pottu trained, has speech and language delay pasaed his hearing test.he throws very violent tempers.he do

Maybe/maybe not: Only 75% of kids are potty trained at 3.Any kid with a communication disorder will be frustrated and tend to throw fits. Proper evaluation by a speech and language specialist and developmental pediatrician could give a better picture of what is going on. This could just be a developmental speech/language issue, separate from the label of autism or its related disorders. ...Read more

Besides a hearing problem, what would be a reason for a 7mo not to coo or babble? She passed the newborn screening & turns to noises but is not vocal.

Besides a hearing problem, what would be a reason for a 7mo not to coo or babble? She passed the newborn screening & turns to noises but is not vocal.

Don't ignore hearing: The newborn hearing exam is one point in time & provides us with needed initial information on hearing issues that are present from birth. However, there are some conditions that can lead to gradual loss after a few months, even if things were fine at the start.I'd get the hearing re-tested as part of a good evaluation with your dr.Baby should be doing reciprocal oos & ahhs & more as you play. ...Read more

My son is 32 mo old. Was diagnosed with global development delay, and autism spectrum, will it be permanent, or will he grow out if it?

Hard to say: There are some with these features that are labeled early on but emerge later in a more expected pattern of development. That said, we do not have the benefit of a complete history, exam and or testing, so any prediction of improvement is not founded on fact. I never give up on these kids.I find many involved docs/therapists expect bad outcomes which color their approach. ...Read more
