Doctor insights on:
Is Pleurisy Dangerous
Yes: This applies to irritation of the tissues lining the lungs. There are two layers to this, with a potential space between them. When inflammation of these tissues occurs, knowing the cause is important. It can also result in inflammatory materials accumulating between the parietal and visceral plurae with resultant pleural effusion or empyema. This can be quite severe.
Depends on cause: There are two layers of pleura, one layer surrounds the lung and the other covers the chest wall. There is a thin layer of fluid between the two layers so the lungs glide smoothly against the chest when breathing. Inflammation of those surfaces can cause pain and causes include infection (bacterial/viral), blood clots, post traumatic/surgery but other causes such as cancer are possible.
Appendectomy 6 days ago. ER says I have pleurisy now. Just got home. What is treatment? Is it dangerous? Didn't give me any meds. All tests normal
Lining of lung: Pleuritis, or pleurisy, is an inflammation of the lining (parietal and visceral pleura) of the lung. It can result from a viral infection, which is a common cause of pleuritic chest pain in young adults. Other causes include autoimmune diseases, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, and drugs that can cause a lupus-like syndrome.See 1 more doctor answer
Pleurisy, or: Inflammation of the membrane caoting the outside of the lung and inside of the rib cage, can be caused by a variety of conditions including infections, tumors and trauma. By far, the most common cause is a viral infection that causes inflammation and therefore pain with each breath. Controlling the pain and giving your body time to fight off the virus is usualy the treatment.
Pain from the lung: Pleurisy is pain cased by inflammation and/or friction between the lung and the inside of the chest wall. Since every breath causes motion between these two structiures, it can become quite painful. A varitety of conditions can cause the irritation and treatment is focused on symptoms as well as the root cause of the inflammation.
Pleurisy description: Pleurisy is inflammation of the lining of the lungs & can be caused by a variety of conditions such as infections, autoimmune disorders, cancers etc. Symptoms include chest pain, fever, cough & other features related to underlying disease process. Treatment requires management of underlying cause & providing symptomatic relief. Consult a lung specialist for discussing its workup & management.
Gently please: The benefits of regular exercise are many. Gentle exercise with pleurisy should be fine. Listen to your body, don't push it too hard, but definitely avoid being too sedentary. Yoga may be an excellent choice of exercise type while you are recovering. Resting well afterwards is equally important.See 1 more doctor answer
See your doctor: This is a problem that requires a face-to-face meeting with your doctor. In that meeting, your doctor will listen to you, perform a throrough examination and possibly order labs or other tests. Based on this information, he/she will be able to tell you what's wrong and what to do about it.
Possibly: Pleurisy is an inflammation of the pleura, the lining of the chest wall around the lungs. There are many possible causes, but one of them is viral pneumonia. Viruses mostly just need time to resolve. You should be checked to make sure you don't have one of the other underlying causes that do require treatment however.
