For early morning insomnia, should I take something long-acting at bedtime every night or something short-acting when needed (about 50% of nights)?
Drugs are not the: Best first-line solution and should be avoided for chronic use. Many rx "sleep" medications have been shown to disrupt normal brainwave activity with long-term use that can cause patients to experience drug-related sleep disruption. Detox w/ md. Exercise, yoga, meditation, massage, quiet mind activity w/ music, good diet & humor, watch sunrise/sunsets. Avoid stimulants, alcohol & nicotine. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I'm on 30 mg vyvanse for a month now. Having trouble sleeping at night (not too terrible but enough). I want to take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to help at night. isok?
When it's recommended that people get eight hours of sleep, is that supposed to be uninterrupted sleep? I wake two or three times a night. Thx.
No: Most people don't sleep a full eight hours without interruption, especially after age 50. Waking to urinate is very common, especially in men due to prostate enlargement; but it is also common in women. Some awakenings are caused by pain, if this is the case, a dose of Acetaminophen at bedtime may make this less likely. If you fall asleep quickly after you wake, no problem. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is using Benadryl (diphenhydramine) every night to go to sleep bad for you? Is it better or worse than ambien?
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) vs ambien: If you can do without neither, would be better, or use only short term. Both can cause tolerance (you need more to get the same effect), so better start with the lowest dose, but ambien has an abuse potential, it is a scheduled drug while benadryl (diphenhydramine) is OTC. Try sleep hygiene: go to bed early at a fixed time, avoid internet, tv, smart phones before bedtime, have a cool quiet bedroom, good luck ...Read more

I take .5 mg of ativan (lorazepam) a couple times a week at night for insomnia. Would it be habit forming if I took it at night more often?
Depends: We each respond differently to habit forming drugs. Some ppl are biochemically more likely to become tolerant, and thus addicted to drugs such as ativan (lorazepam). Ativan (lorazepam) is in the benzodiazepine family - a strongly habit forming drug. Rather than taking it more often, i recommend exploring why you are having insomnia, and address the underlying issues first. Good sleep hygeine and stress reduction may help. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
What to do if I am feeling less drowsy and more awake when i sleep for like 6 hours rather than a full 10 hour sleep. Why is that?
Is oversleeping unhealthy? I am not tired if i sleep 7 hours a day, but it's become a habit to sleep 10 hours a day depending on my schedule!
I think so: Oversleeping has been linked to a host of medical problems, including diabetes, heart disease, and increased risk of death. Researchers are careful to note, however, that two other factors -- depression and low socioeconomic status -- are strongly associated with oversleeping. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
