Are novolin (insulin) and novolog interchangeable?

Are novolin (insulin) and novolog interchangeable?

Different categories: Novolin is the brand name given to all human insulins made by novo nordisk. Under this brand are specific types of Insulin such as regular, nph, and 70/30. Novolog Insulin is a synthetic recombinant Insulin that is very rapid acting. I often get this question because NovoLog is more expensive than any of the novolins. However, they cannot be substituted for each other. ...Read more

Are novolog 70/30 and novolin 70/30 insulin that same?

Novolog is faster: The '70' portion of both is same, but the '30' portion of NovoLog has faster onset of action <15 min vs about 30 min for novolin (insulin). Otherwise, unit for unit they are about same. The NovoLog thus can be used right before meal, novolin (insulin) should be about 15-30 min before meal. So just timing is different. Consult doc. Good luck. ...Read more

What is the deference between novolog insulin & novolin insulin?

Both biosynthetic: Novolog and Novolin R are both meal time insulins. Novolog can injected before or immediately after meals, while Novolin R must be at least 30 minutes before meals. Novolin n is as basal insulin. Novolog has a quickest onset, shortest duration of action, least absorption variability, and reduces chances of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if used right compared to Novolin R and n respectively. ...Read more

What is the difference between novolog 70/30 and novolin (insulin)?

Big difference: Novolin has become synonimus with nph novolin insulin, though novolin is just a brand name, you also have novolin regular Insulin or novolin-r, so you have to be careful. Novolog 70 /30 is a combination of 70% nph and 30% NovoLog (fast acting insulin) therefore the action of both insulins is very different. ...Read more

What is the difference between novolin (insulin) n and novolog for a type two diabetic?

Onset/duration: Novolin n (a brand of nph) is an intermediate acting insulin. It starts working after a few hrs, peaks in 6-8 hrs and lasts 12-16 hrs. Novolog is a rapid acting insulin. It starts to work in a few mins, peaks in an hr or two, lasts 4 hrs or so. Novolog is used @meals to prevent post-meal high bs and to "correct" bs. Nph (or better yet a long acting like Lantus (insulin glargine) or levemir) keeps fasting bs lower. ...Read more

Can I switch from novolog and lantis to the relion brand of insulin?

ReliOn Insulin: Walmart sells ReliOn insulin, Novolin (Regular, NPH and 70/30) at discounted prices. These are biosynthetic human insulins, time to peak and duration of action do not replicate endogenous basal and postprandial insulin secretion. Synthetic insulin analogs (lispro, aspart, glulisine, glargine, detemir, degludec) are preferred. Discuss with your doctor if switching insulin is right for you. ...Read more

What are the differences between apidra (insulin glulisine) and novolog insulin? Which is better?

Insulin analogs: Hi. Novolog (aspart) and Apidra (insulin glulisine) (glulisine) are both engineered insulins not found in nature. The human insulin gene was modified to give the expressed insulin analog favorable properties for meal coverage for diabetics. To me they are indistinguishable, but Apidra (insulin glulisine) works a little faster in obese patients. They are both very good meal insulins. Goo luck, and keep your diabetes tightly controlled! ...Read more

Changing insulin from humalog (insulin lispro) to novolog - any effect?

Congratulations: Great move. Well, NovoLog is quicker acting but also quicker getting out of your system. So make sure you eat as soon as you inject. As with any insulin, proper close titration is necessary to avoid hypoglycemia and wild fluctuations in your sugar levels. Overall, best short acting Insulin on the market at present, and the most physiologic. ...Read more

I have injected levemir (insulin detemir) insulin instead of novolog insulin by accident what do I do now?

I have injected levemir (insulin detemir) insulin instead of novolog insulin by accident what do I do now?

Eye on sugar: Hi. Sooner or later, it happens to most insulin users. It would have been more dangerous had you injected Novolog instead of Levemir (insulin detemir), (insulin detemir) because Novolog hits with a bang, and hypoglycemia risk would be much higher for 6-7 hours. As it is, your risk is much lower for hypoglycemia having taken Levemir (insulin detemir) by accident. It won't cover your meal well at all. Follow your sugars more for next 16-20 hours. ...Read more

Any advice? I have injected levemir (insulin detemir) insulin instead of novolog insulin by accident what do I do now?

Long Instead short: Levemir (insulin detemir) is long acting. It will stay in your system about 24hrs. Don't take the rest of the Novolog for the 24h.Can stay longer than 24hrs if you have kidney or liver problem.

My fiancé ran out of lantus (insulin glargine) and has to wait till Tuesday to get more. But she has novolog pens. Will she be OK till Tuesday?

Possibly.: Presumably, your fiance is checking her blood sugar levels and following an appropriate diet. The best thing to do would be for her to phone her doctor to get advice. In addition, should she be advised to replace her Lantus (insulin glargine) immediately, most pharmacy plans have a provision for the patient (client) who has the same dilemma. My 13yr daughter is on a carb counting method to administer here novolog insulin before meals. Is this best? I'm confused of having to count

Carb Counting: Diabetes is a very difficult problem to deal with. But, one of the most vital skills that will serve your daughter over her lifetime is learning to limit carbs; to count the calories or grams of carbs so that her diabetes can be well controlled and she can grow into adulthood without any negative consequences. Once the skill of carb counting is leaned it is very simple. ...Read more

What would happen to someone who is not diabetic if they took 100 units of novolog and 100 units of lantus (insulin glargine) all at once best guess?

Depends: Depending upon the diet and health of the individual, it would cause hypoglycemia that may lead to seizures, coma and death. Do not experiment with medications.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.

Which is more likely to cause weight gain novolog or lantus (insulin glargine)? Pls explain. Thx!

Which is more likely to cause weight gain novolog or lantus (insulin glargine)? Pls explain. Thx!

Neither: I don't think one is more likely than the other to cause weight gain all by itself. Weight gain comes with poor blood sugar control. Whichever preparation (or combination of the two) allows you the tightest control wins.
Are you not going to test more than once or twice a day, ever? Then Lantus (insulin glargine) is probably better, since it's longer acting. I would not recommend laziness in this, however.
Be well. ...Read more

Can my 13 yr daughter use the omnipod system even if she's injecting lantus (insulin glargine) upon waking up and at bedtime as well as novolog 3x a day before meals?

Replace injections: Omnipod (or Insulin pump) can replace both Lantus (insulin glargine) and NovoLog injections. The device is loaded with short-acting Insulin (like novolog) and can deliver a steady stream of Insulin (which is what Lantus (insulin glargine) is designed to do) and deliver boluses for before meals (which is what NovoLog is doing now for her). Insulin pump may not be right for everyone so talk to the endocrinologist to get more info. ...Read more
