If on nexium (esomeprazole) 40 mg 2x a day - can I take tums daily to to prevent further issues with the esophagus?

No: Akin to putting out a hotel fire with a glass of water. The problem is not "run of the mill" acid reflux if 80mg daily nexium (esomeprazole) is ineffective. A gastroenterologist must be consulted for further testing. Once the problem is identified, an effective solution will be applied. If left untreated, serious acute damage to the esophagus or stomach may ensue and the risk of developing cancer increases. ...Read more

For the past week, my heartburn has been constant. Tums, zantac, doesn't help. Trying 20 mg of nexium (esomeprazole). I was on augmentin. What's causing this?

GERD: Augmentin is an antibiotic that's known to be rather harsh on stomach (http://www. Drugs. Com/sfx/augmentin-side-effects. Html). If brand name OTC Nexium (esomeprazole) is too expensive, consider it's original source as generic omeprazole which should be just as effective and also available w/o prescription. If heartburn doesn't improve w/either of these Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI), time to go see your Family Doc ...Read more

Is nexium considered antiacid? I have a test which requires no antiacids for 3 days, however, if I don't take it I get bad heartburn sometimes.

Nexium: Is NOT an "antacid" TECHNICALLY but if a test REQUIRES that stomach acid be present then NEXIUM which stops the RELEASE of that acid should not be used! Ask the performing physician/laboratory...and explain your "problem"
Hope this is helpful

How I can stop antiacid nexium (esomeprazole)? I use 20mg per day for 5 day but before 40mg for a month. My doctor gave for 3 month but I read around that irs very bad

Try zantac/pepcid: Long term use of Nexium (esomeprazole) and like drugs has been linked to increase risk of pneumonia, hip fracture, c difficile infection. In addition, patients taking Plavix should avoid Nexium (esomeprazole) due to risks of gastrointestinal bleeding and the fact that it reduces plavix's effectiveness at protecting further heart attacks. Using zantac or pepcid, if effective, would be a safer alternative. ...Read more

My GI rx'd me Nexium (esomeprazole) 40mg 1x/day for reflux while I'm waiting on a scope. Does Nexium (esomeprazole) totally shutdown acid production or just reduce it? How is food digested without acid if it does shutdown?

Just reduces acid: The class of proton pump inhibitors like Nexium (esomeprazole) just reduces acid suppression. It is nearly impossible to make the stomach completely devoid of acid with those meds. And it would probably not be good to do that anyway. ...Read more

Do antacids deplete b12?

Do antacids deplete b12?

Theoretically: Lack of stomach acid can cause impaired release of B12 from food. Typical antacids (tums, mylanta, etc) and intermittent use of other agents are not likely sufficient to affect this in any clinical way, but proton pump inhibitors such as Omeprazole when taken daily for long periods of time can cause vit B12 deficiency. ...Read more
