Is Neoprene Better Than Vinyl For Dumbbells
I know neoprene is considered a toxic chemical, but is it toxic to use neoprene dumbells for a workout? If so, how is it toxic through using dumbells?
Probably safe: Neoprene is usually used for stretchy materials like laptop sleeves & wetsuits. It can "outgas" toxic chemicals and when glued to other materials the glues are toxic too. Chemicals in neoprene can irritate skin. But once neoprene dumbells are a few months old, most of the toxic chemicals that might outgas from them have dissipated and there should be no significant hazard from using them. ...Read more
I am a breast cancer patient currently in remission (2 years, stage 0). Can Neoprene dumbbells be harmful for me?
Neoprene is polychloroprene
This is synthetic rubber
The EPA classifies Chloroprene as a group D chemical
this makes its carcinogenicity inconclusive
The International agency for Research on cancer IARC classified it as group 2 B (possibly carcinogenic)
This is likely to occur mainly as industrial exposure and may be linked to skin and lung cancers ...Read more
Not concerned: Neoprene is polymerized chloroprene. Chloroprene monomer has caused cancer in a few obscure animal experiments, just as most anything else can be made to do as a promoter. There is talk of genotoxicity, but in its polymerized form it couldn't reach the genes in any case. Folks working with chloroprene aren't showing up with extra cancers. Don't throw away your wetsuit. ...Read more
No.: If by "work" you mean reduce your weight or body fat, the answer is no. The elastic tension of a neoprene wrap might actually reduce your waist size as long as you are wearing it, but this is a "girdle" effect and has nothing to do with changing your body composition. ...Read more

What to do if I have this little pooch. Can I wear a neoprene belt to help reshape and flatten that area?
That won't work: Abdominal fat is first to show and last to go. Wearing a rubber belt will cause you to sweat and lose some water which may make your abdomen look thinner, but as soon as you drink water it will return to its former size. Best way to lose the gut is the tried and true method of decreasing calorie intake and increase calorie burning by increasing activity. You can't spot reduce, fat is lost evenly. ...Read more
Not likely.: Neoprene is the trade name of polychloroprene, a rubber-like polymer made by chemically treating chloroprene (2-chloro-1, 3-butadiene) so that each molecule hooks up to another in long chains. Chloroprene is considered possibly carcinogenic to humans, but virtually all the chloroprene is used up in the conversion to the polymer. The amount left behind is probably too miniscule to pose any risk. ...Read more

Cleaning after a heavy deer mice infestation in the Northeast. Using N-95 with partial seal and neoprene disposable gloves. Likelihood of hantavirus?
Small.: Deer mice are widespread throughout the U.S. and about 20% carry hantavirus. Hantavirus is carried into the lungs by dust & dirt particles which an N-95 is about 90% effective in blocking out. Only a few strains of hantavirus cause HPS (Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome.) The virus is killed quickly by sunlight exposure. You took the right precautions & are unlikely to get sick from HPS. ...Read more

My orthopaedic said I have some arthritus in my knees, is it o.K to wear a neoprene sleeve over my knees.?
Yes: It is okay, but will most likely not do much for the arthritis. If you have just minimal arthritis, and you feel it is giving you a little extra support, then definitely do what ever feels better. However, make sure to give your knees some breaks and do not get to the point where you depend on the sleeves. Try hamstring stretches and quad strengthening as well. Best of luck! ...Read more
Yes and no: I don't think that wearing a neoprene sleeve over your elbow that is " too tight" will damage the bones that make up the elbow joint in any way. But it is not good for some of the soft tissues that pass through that area. For example, there are 3 main nerves that run through the elbow area and compression can lead to what is known as a peripheral nerve entrapment syndrome, cubital tumn syndrome ...Read more

I have knee arthritus, I wear a neoprene sleeve over both knees. If sleeve is too tight can it effect my ankles?
Will a neoprene elbow compression sleeve help for ulnar nerve entrapment? It feels like the sleeve constricts blood flow a little too much.
Might be too small: In general, a neoprene elbow splint/sleeve can help with a mild ulnar neuropathy by limiting extreme flexion of the elbow past 90 degrees--which stretches the nerve across the elbow. It should not restrict blood flow. Consider something with more padding to cover the nerve and something less tight/constricting. ...Read more
