Very abnormal: Normal temperature can vary between 36.5 to 37.5 Celcius through the day but both high and low temperatures may be a sign of infection or other serious problems. If you took the temperature in an accurate way and it is as low as you mention, take your baby to see a doctor immediately. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Oximeter is giving a reading of 92 with a pulse of 103 for a 3 year old that has asthma while asleep after xopenex (levalbuterol). Is this normal? Is oxygen too low?
See below: A pulse ox of 92% indicates a moderate asthma attack. Pulse is normal. More importantly is wether or not your child is responding to treatment. Proper treatment can prevent the attack from becoming severe with a pulse ox <90%. You want to prevent that. CALL YOUR PEDIATRICIAN FOR ADVICE. If unable to reach he/she have your child evaluated in ER/EC ...Read more
My 14 month old son keeps having episodes of shaking, seems to occur when a meal is a bit late or a snack missed is this normal?
Concerns about low: blood sugar? Maybe, but there are other issues to be considered. Behavior associated with frustration. Has he had these episodes when not hungry? How long do they last? Is there any evidence of alteration in alertness, is he developing well? Are his milestones age appropriate. Please feel free to continue discussion online at www.healthtap.com/dr-nnebe. My 41 year old daughter is in the hospital with a Hgb of 2.1. Her most prominent indication of this was very poor brain function...is this possible?
Extreme anemia: Wow! That's an extraordinarily low hemoglobin level; she may be lucky to be alive. Such extreme anemia certainly could cause altered mental function and other neurological symptoms, but so could the thing(s) that might cause the anemia, like blood loss, iron or folate (folic acid) deficiency, etc, etc. Discuss with her doctor(s). Good luck to her. ...Read more
My 6 yr old daughter has a fever of 101.5 and her respiration rate is 40. Is that within a normal range for fever? Thank you
High end: The average respiratory rate @ 6 would be expected to run 18-28 / min with a rise of 5/min for every degree of fever (f) .This would put a rate of 40 at the higher end of expected. If the process giving her a fever is located in her lungs, it could easily push it higher. I often get chest x-rays in kids more due to increased work of breathing than what i hear on exam. ...Read more

4-6 words: At 15 months of age we expect a child to have 4-6 words. They generally can follow simple commands, such as 'go get your shoes,' and can point to 2-3 body parts (eyes, nose, ears, belly button, etc.) Of course all children develop at their own pace. But a 16 month old who is not close to meeting these milestones should be evaluated by their doctor. ...Read more
My female child's age is 1 year 11 months. Her hemoglobin range is 9.2. Had a test of electrophoresis. The report says beta thalassemia. What to do?
Trait or?: It is important to know if this is beta thalassemia trait or disease. With a hb of 9.2 it is likely the trait which does not require treatment. Ask her doctor if it this is trait or disease. This can be determined from the electrophoresis if it is the disease she need to be followed by a good pediatric hematologist. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
If I have a TSH level of 2.59 but a T4 level of 0.96 is that still normal? My doctor said I'm within all normal ranges. My FT3 is 4.2
Thyroid Tests: The T4 is in teh low normal range. However the TSH and T3 (liothyronine) seem to be fine. I usually look for antibodies to the thyroid and also symptoms to interpret thyroid normalcy. Classic medicine is only about TSH and T4. So if you have symptoms more may need to be done. ...Read more

Is it normal for WBC to go from 3.3 to 7.1 in just a matter of 4 days? This is a toddler that has also had a low grade temp (99.5-101.1) for 4 weeks.
Isnt a TSH of 0.99 a little bit low although it is in range? And is a burning feeling in the thyroid area a common symptom in thyroid disorders?
Doubt thyroid: Reference ranges are set so that several percent of healthy folks fall outside. A tender thyroid suggests DeQuervain's but burning / paresthesias less so. Look for some other cause of your illness. I believe we've met before -- Remember Sjogren's and Hashimoto's as causes of CNS vasculitis / myelin loss. Good luck on continuing workup. ...Read more
Laws of genetics: When a woman with Down's Syndrome forms gametes (unfertilized eggs), all the chromosomes except #21 will split evenly. Since Down's Syndrome means three copies of chromosome 21 (by dehfinition), the chromosome cannot split "evenly" - half will have 1 copy (normal); the other half will have 2 copies (Down's syndrome carrier). These will pair with 1 copy (usually) of Chromosome 21 from the father. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Not necessarily.: Gold standard is a rectal temperature of 100.4 or greater for the definition of "fever" in infants. Fever is merely a symptom and sometimes time will determine how the thermostat of your infant will behave-better/worse. 99.3 could be a normal variation or a sign of an illness. Other symptoms associated to it will remain important: intake, output-wet/dirty diapers, could sx's, behavior, sleep. ...Read more
