Is it true that gargling with salt water helps with tonsil stones?

Is it true that gargling with salt water helps with tonsil stones?

Yes: Tonsil "stones" are concretions of microscopic food particles, sloughing mucosa cells from the lining of the oral cavity, and bacteria (usually in the form of "biofilm"). Anything that causes them to be dislodged will help keep those pits in the tonsil clear. I have even known some patients who use a "water pik" to keep their tonsils clear of stones.

If you eat dairy while you have tonsillitis does this put you at risk for developing tonsil stones? Does gargling salt water prevent this?

If you eat dairy while you have tonsillitis does this put you at risk for developing tonsil stones? Does gargling salt water prevent this?

Probably not: This is a very common problem. Most people can manage the condition by frequent gargling with listerine or hydrogen peroxide, gently brushing over the area with a soft brush, or using a water pik to dislodge them. Sometimes the tonsils may become chronically infected, painful, or swollen. Then it may be time to consider removal. You should see an otolaryngologist and discuss.

Pressure wash: Try a water pik ("water flosser") to pressure wash out the tonsils. It generally helps. If not, you may need to see your doctor.

I've had a sore tonsil that goes away with salt water it looks different then the other tonsil and I keep getting tonsil stones? Any idea why?

I've had a sore tonsil that goes away with salt water it looks different then the other tonsil and I keep getting tonsil stones? Any idea why?

Tonsil stones: Hello, tonsils live in the back of your throat and with every swallow of food, some particles may become trapped within the crypts of your tonsils. You are already gargling with water after meals which is helping. The only cure is a tonsillectomy. If one side is significantly larger than the other, that is another reason for ENT evaluation. Good luck.

Tonsiliths: There are a few simple things you can do. Salt water gargle will help to prevent them. You can use a Water-Pic which can be very helpful to irrigate them out. You can use a plastic ear curette (designed for removing wax from ear) which is less uncomfortable than cotton swab. I would try to avoid surgery unless they frequently get infected.

It should.: Gargling with warm salt water or an antiseptic mouthwash multiple times each day should help. If it persists, see your doctor.

You may need exam: Sore throats are generally caused by viruses or bacteria. The former will resolve in time and with the help of supportive measures like rest, fluids, green tea, etc. The latter (bacteria) may require antibiotics which would nee to be determined by a doctor and prescribed by them, etc. Best wishes.

Sore throat: Most throat infections are viral harmless and resolve on their own Viral infections tend to ulcer as shown in this pic. Strep infections need to b treated to prevent heart and kidney damage. These infections generally cause pain when u swallow and are associated with headaches and upset stomach. Note fever is not a reliable symptom. If u have the strep symptoms u need to see a doc.

Tonsillectomy: Tonsil stones are a very common condition caused bacterial colonization (thought to be biofilms) and debris in the crypts of your tonsils. Tonsillectomy (laser cryptolysis, subcapsular tonsillectomy, traditional tonsillectomy) is the only permanent effective treatment.
