Hello I had a baby in June I had received epidural now my back has been killing me last 5 months I never had back problems till this happened ?

Hard to say: We don't always have an explanation for this. I will see patients like you in my office and often get an MRI to look into it further and the studies often come back normal. We often don't know the cause; perhaps some subtle nerve injury or scar tissue. Thankfully it often does ultimately resolve. I would not hesitate to see a spine specialist to be evaluated. ...Read more

Why do people get labor epidurals since it causes so many back problems later in life?

Why do people get labor epidurals since it causes so many back problems later in life?

Very low risk: I have to disagree with you--epidurals very rarely cause any long-term problems, and often are used in the treatment of back pain from other causes. Labor epidurals are the safest way to manage labors which are severely painful, and can also be extended to provide anesthesia if a c-section is necessary. They very seldom cause any back pain other than temporary soreness at the insertion site. ...Read more

Chronic back pain: Pain is a challenging thing to manage. Establishing a goal for pain relief is a start. Depending on what is the underlying cause of the pain, if the injections did not help, surgery may be an option. Chronic opioid therapy, with combinations of short acting and long acting meds is an option as well. Lastly, which ever treatment modality is chosen, you should also entertain the mental toll. ...Read more

Good 1st option: Being a thin woman, the size c breasts could be causing a lot of strain on your back. Definitely start with getting some good, supportive bras.
