But why?: Interesting question. According to poison control, no. But the ingredients are camphor and menthol both of which have been used in cooking for centuries. It appears that doses of 50 mg camphor are safe ( way more than would be fond in cooking) 2000 mg will likely produce serious symptoms and 4000 mg is possibly fatal. Probably.: My mother was a huge vicks fan; anytime my nose was close to running, i would get dipped in a huge vat of vicks, and then she would slide me into bed like a salami. And i'm still here, so i suppose it's okay. Whether or not it actually helped, or just made my mom feel better, is another question. No: Ingesting (putting it on the mouth) menthol can be poisonous and even fatal in some cases. There have been even reports of infants developing respiratory difficulty and turning blue with the application of menthol containing products near the baby's face/ nose (like vapor rub).
