MY todler is over 1 year old and I am still breastfeeding a couple times a day. Would it be safe if I took .5mg of xanax (alprazolam)?

MY todler is over 1 year old and I am still breastfeeding a couple times a day. Would it be safe if I took .5mg of xanax (alprazolam)?

Is not safe: 0.5mg of Alprazolam or Xanax (alprazolam) is not too much. Thec risc of breast feeding it wiill depend if it is a one time use or a chronic treatment?. There will be traces of it in the breast milk which the baby would ingest. Again if it's a one time it will be negligible, of no consequences but if you planning on chronic xanax (alprazolam) use, better stop breast feeding now. One year is a good run anyway. ...Read more

Is it safe to take Xanax (alprazolam) while breastfeeding?

Other option better: There are other medications that are shorter-acting that would be safer. Xanax (alprazolam) can cause babies to be too sleepy or irritable. They can also suffer withdrawal symptoms if the mother has been on it (exposing them) and it is discontinued. ...Read more

Is it safe to take a Xanax (alprazolam) once while breastfeeding?

Probably ok: Taking a single dose of Xanax (alprazolam) (such as before a medical procedure) usually does not cause any problems, and many healthcare providers recommend that women continue breastfeeding as usual after a single Xanax (alprazolam) dose. Problems are more likely to occur when women take Xanax (alprazolam) on a regular basis because it is transferred into the breastmilk. Xanax (alprazolam) can cause drowsiness and feeding problems in babies. ...Read more

Watch for sedation: in baby & withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking it. See http://www.drugs.com/breastfeeding/alprazolam.html. Talk to your psychiatrist about safer meds & see a psychologist for Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. How long after taking Xanax (alprazolam) can you resume breastfeeding?

A few days: I guess I would ask if you were on Xanax (alprazolam) while you were pregnant, since it is a class D drug and not recommended in pregnancy. It can be switched to other benzos such as Ativan or Serax (lorazepam and oxazepam). It is a short-acting drug which does not accumulate in fat, so it it is gone within 72 hours. You can also talk to your prescriber about Clonazepam as a substitute if it is needed. ...Read more
