What is an easy way to give my child liquid colace (docusate sodium) to help with his constipation?
No easy way: Liquid colace (docusate sodium) is super bitter- it would take a lot of something sweet to make it palable. Ask your physician if you could use MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) instead. It is over the counter, mixes well with juice and doesn't have a bitter after taste. Don't forget to increase fluids and whole fibers in your child's diet. Whole grains, whole apples, plums and pears will help. ...Read more
Almost 2 weeks on lithium & I feel good. I prolly could use an lil more but I am constipation! I started colace (docusate sodium). Is that a side effect to lithium :|?
No: Your constipation is coming from your iron supplement. If it is persistent I would also have a thyroid level checked because hypothyroidism can cause constipation. Hypothyroidism is also a potential side effect of lithium but usually after long-term use. About 25% of people who use lithium will eventually develop hypothyroidism. I hope this helps. Best wishes. ...Read more
Can I use colace as a miralax (polyethylene glycol) replacement every day for chronic constipation?
Up to your doctor: Talking with your own doctor about this will yield more personalized results -- it looks like you've had quite an extensive workup of your GI complaints. Being on chronic laxatives is likely to be unhealthy for you in the long run. Colace (docusate sodium) is a stool softener, not a laxative -- but some say it causes cramping. Hoping you and your doctor can arrive at a helpful plan. ...Read more

I have a back issue and am constipated. I took 4 colace (docusate sodium) stool softeners and still have not had a bowel movement, its been 3 days, should I try the?
Continue the colace (docusate sodium):
If you are taking pain medications for the back issue, you can become rather constipated due to them. Therefore I recommend that anyone taking narcotic pain meds regularly take a stool softener.
I'd recommend continuing the colace, (docusate sodium) make sure to drink plenty of water, and you can add one other over the counter medication to help you have a bm such as mineral oil, senna, or dulcolax. ...Read more
Is Isphagula/psyllium a safe supplement to take daily for the management of chronic constipation?
Yes but can be gassy: People who eat lots of fiber tend to have lots of gas, as the undigested fiber is a picnic for billions of bowel microbes and bacteria. There are reportedly more billions of bacteria inside our bowels than the number of cells we have making up our own bodies. The bacteria will likely keep eating and keep making gas, as long as the fiber "food" keeps coming down the pipe. ...Read more
I'm 6 weeks pregnant & have bad constipation&am very bloated. Its bad. I have docusate sodium 100mg & was wondering if it was safe to take 6 instead of 1-3?
Follow the label: For now, follow the label on the docusate. Next, go see your OB doctor and ask what to do - it's going to be a long 9.5 months! Make sure you are eating very healthy foods - avoid fast food, processed foods (like cheetos, frozen dinners, etc.). Eat lots of fresh veggies. Don't drink pop or fruit juice (stick to water and milk). Avoid rice and applesauce (both will constipate). Add prunes! ...Read more

I am taking stool softener, (docusate sodium) 2 a day it is really helping me. Is it safe to take it for a long time, or there is alternatives?
Constipation: Long term laxatives are not great for the bowels. If possible add magnesium 250mg once per day to your routine and that may help increase absorption into the gut and help you taper off the laxatives. Also don't forget to drink a lot of water to soften the bowels and fiber to keep things moving. ...Read more

Is Colace (docusate sodium) ok to take for long term? Have bee taking daily for 3 years (during and following chemotherapy). Different opinions among doctors.
Depends on stooling: A lot of nursing home patients have a difficult time with stooling. Some medications, especially opiate pain medications, are constipating. For those individuals colace (docusate sodium) is a necessary thing. Not all though, and if stooling is going well, there's no reason to add another medication. Much also depends on the ability to generate enough force to get the stool out. ...Read more
