Is It Safe To Give A 1 Month Old Miralax
I never would: A 2 mo is dependent on their nasal passages to breathe. The don't routinely use their open mouth to augment breathing until 4-6m. Dimetapp and similar drugs (once prescription meds) work by drying secretions, thickening the buggers, making any drainage in a babies nose thicker. Useing this is one way to make it harder for them to breathe. Nasal saline washout is the best Rx for a 2 mo. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
At what age can a baby take miralax (polyethylene glycol)? My pediatrician old me it is safe to give my 10 month old benefiber, but it is still not doing the trick.
I Rx it that young: I often use full strength apple or prune juice (not diluted baby juice)in infants. It takes 2-4 days but in volumes of 1-2 oz /1-3xday it helps some. The mirilax was a prescription med before years of safe use let it come to the otc market. The pedi gi's in my neighborhood started using it >a decade ago in infants & i occasionally do.Start with teaspoon & increase as needed to get to soft stools. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Is it safe to give mylicon drops to a 2 year old toddler everyday? 0.3ml dose, twice a day? My son's tummy is usually bloated without it.
Yes: It's safe to use Simethicone on a daily basis. It is not absorbed systemically, just stays in the GI tract and breaks up gas bubbles. Look also into why he's so bloated - is there a food sensitivity, eating too fast, drinking soda? All of these and many more can be causes, so keep an eye open and/or talk to your pediatrician. ...Read more
Is it safe to give an infant of 1 month a suppository? How often and what's best for infant constipation?
Sometimes: Many children become constipated but it is by no means normal - many parents use an occasional glycerin suppository without issue but you really should discuss this with your doctor and have the child checked as this is not normal and possibly a change in diet or a medication may be more helpful especially if this is chronic ...Read more
Yes: This was once a prescription product but the pediatric GI 's began using it in kids a decade or so ago & with its safe record it has become a mainstay of treatment for some.I don't use it first this young. Full strength prune or apple juice in quantities of an ounce or 2 , 1 or more x/d will help most infants. If that has not helped in a month i work with moms on an individual plan with it. ...Read more
Check with doc: Cetirizine is good as an allergy medicine for control over a period of time. It's not meant as an acute treatment. If your child suddenly has cough, you should have him examined to make sure the issue is viral vs. Asthma or other etiology. A 2 year old can take cetirizine, but it's off-label, and should be guided by a physician. ...Read more
Only if doctor says!: If your child's doctor prescribes albuterol for him/her to treat wheezing, then give it. Never use someone else's prescription for your baby. Albuterol only helps for wheezing/reactive airways disease, and if that's not what your baby has, it wont help and it can have side effects. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My 1 yr old is often constipated since switching to milk, stool so hard it causes bleeding. Anything safe to give for relief?
Lots of things..: First, make sure the little guy is getting plenty of water - he should be drinking 30-40 ounces daily if stools are that hard. 8 ounces of it can be juice - apple or prune best if constipated. Make sure not overdoing the milk - 16-20 ounces max for a 1 year old who is constipated. Finally, make sure enough fiber in diet - whole grains, roughage. If need something additionally, MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) is very safe. ...Read more
Is it safe to give gripe water to my 1 month old colic and gassy baby?If safe, what is the recommended dosage?
Thanks in advance :)
Unsure ingredients: Doctors usually don't give babies any medications, even over-the-counter items, unless there's good benefit. A mom can bring the item to the doctor to check the ingredients, but a little bit of a trusted brand of "gripe water" drops is ok to try. It may or may not help any colicky symptoms. If it doesn't seem to help, then it shouldn't be used. I don't recommend "gripe water" for my patients. ...Read more
