Is It Safe To Give A 1 Month Old Miralax
At what age can a baby take miralax (polyethylene glycol)? My pediatrician old me it is safe to give my 10 month old benefiber, but it is still not doing the trick.
I Rx it that young: I often use full strength apple or prune juice (not diluted baby juice)in infants. It takes 2-4 days but in volumes of 1-2 oz /1-3xday it helps some. The mirilax was a prescription med before years of safe use let it come to the otc market. The pedi gi's in my neighborhood started using it >a decade ago in infants & I occasionally do. Start with teaspoon & increase as needed to get to soft stools. ...Read more
Yes: I would encourage you to do it under your docs supervision. However, I have used it for infants this young. ...Read more
My one year old has constant painful stools (constipation) what can I do? Someone told me to give him a little miralax (polyethylene glycol). Can that help or harm him?
Increase fluids: Most important to constipation is to make sure the child is getting plenty of fluids. At 12 months, can add a few ounces of water to daily milk intake, and if stools are harder than normal, a few ounces of juice can be added from a cup as well. Don't get into habit of juice from a bottle. Add extra fiber to diet. If persists, talk to doc about what meds may help, like miralax- can be very helpful! ...Read more
Yes: This was once a prescription product but the pediatric GI 's began using it in kids a decade or so ago & with its safe record it has become a mainstay of treatment for some. I don't use it first this young. Full strength prune or apple juice in quantities of an ounce or 2, 1 or more x/d will help most infants. If that has not helped in a month I work with moms on an individual plan with it. ...Read more
I recommend 2.5-5 ml: But this depends a little on the size of your baby. Preschool children easily tolerate 1 cap full, which is 17 grams (about a tablespoon or 15ml). If dose is not effective in 8-12 hours, a repeat dose may be given until stool is soft. Too large a dose will cause diarrhea and can potentially cause dehydration, so be sure to offer fluids. ...Read more
Does Miralax (polyethylene glycol) has risk for kids if takes one- two cups a day for few months? Is there any natural safe solution for constipation beside the Miralax (polyethylene glycol)?
Safe and a blessing: Chronic stool retention has been around as a problem for decades. We used to use flavored mineral oil which was messy and leached out vitamins. Mirilax came along and was tested in prescription form for years before proven so safe it went OTC. I have had kids who needed it for a year to straighten out their system. The most common reason for treatment failure is stopping it too soon. ...Read more
My six month old has to use Simalac spit up due to acid reflux. The formula is causing her to have hard stools that are causing her pain. Miralax?
Hi my daughter is 3 months old and weights about 13 pounds. She's keeps getting constipated and the doctor suggested miralax (polyethylene glycol). What dosage do I give?
Constipation: Is your little one drinking formula or breast milk? Infants fed breast milk sometimes go many days without a bowel movement. If stools are not firm and there is no significant straining, it is usually safe to watch & wait up to one week. I am not aware of recommended dosage guidelines for Miralax (polyethylene glycol) in a young infant. Other options: prune or pear juice, mineral oil or glycerin suppositories. ...Read more
My 13 month old son has had constipation since birth. He's been taking miralax (polyethylene glycol) for 3 weeks. Now has diarrhea and white colored stools. Is this normal?
13 month old son has been constipated since birth. Taking miralax (polyethylene glycol). Stools are soft but hard to pass. He screams in pain, cries & grunts when pooping.
Needs specialist: If the stools are soft and your son is still crying in pain with bowel movements, a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist (specialist in stomach and bowel problems) is in order. It is possible that there is an anatomical problem which is interfering with normal stooling. Ask your primary doctor if a referral is needed. ...Read more

I'm on hyosycamine...But it gives me constipation...Is miralax (polyethylene glycol) safe to take while on hyosycamine? If not, suggestions?
Constipation tx: Your medicine will both slow, the gut and may cause loss of water from stool, both causing constipation. Miralax (polyethylene glycol) will draw water in the bowel as an osmotic agent. You may also need a push to the system. Yes: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is probably the most commonly used medicine for constipation in pediatrics. Pediatricians and pediatric gastroenterologists use it for children even younger than your child. I would recommend discussing with your pediatrician the dosage, the length of expected treatment and when your doctor wishes to see your child back for a recheck. ...Read more
5year old male e.o.e diagnosed Thursday did 4 cap fulls of miralax to 12 oz. Of water times 3 at 3 hours apart. Thru gtube. Called since Thursday he's only passing what looks like water and coffee grounds. G.I doesn't seem to give me anything to go on. No
Why prescribed?: That sounds like a "bowel prep" dose of miralax (polyethylene glycol). While there is no danger in that dose, it will cause copious watery stools, which is what is expected. Without knowing more, it sounds like GI is clearing his bowels for a procedure or to correct chronic, severe constipation. That mixture of miralax (polyethylene glycol) to water balances the electrolytes, so don't change the dosing amounts, or he may get dehydrated. ...Read more
18 yr old son hasn't had a bm in 3 days I gave him miralax (polyethylene glycol) for 2 days and still nothing should I give him something else? He has left side discomfort.
Med takes longer: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is a wetting agent not a laxative. Relief from the discomfort of constipation is best done with a washout of the rectal vault & sigmoid colon using an enema or stimulant suppository like ducolax. Miralax (polyethylene glycol) will take about 3 days to work its way through the system if the kid is having bowel movements. It's longer term use over weeks to months may help fix the issue. ...Read more

3 1/2 yr old with constipation...Is miralax (polyethylene glycol) safe? If so, what is recommended dosage?
My 6 week old daughter is always constipated, can I give her miralax (polyethylene glycol)? If so how much how often?
NO: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is not a good choice at this time. Depends on feedings - if she is TOTALLY breastfed then 2-7 days between stools are normal as breastmilk is almost fully digested. Formula babies more likely to have issues. ADULT apple juice good shot of it in each bottle can help soften stool. Glycerin suppositories will help lubricate/pull water to anus. See MD soon for more guidance. ...Read more

I have a 10 yr old son who has had constipation issues for about 4 years, his pediatrician suggest miralax (polyethylene glycol) but no matter what I mix it with he will not drink it. What can I give him as an alternative?

4yr old daughter had been constipated I was told to give an enema she had lrg watery bm w/some firm stool, is she clear out&should I give miralax (polyethylene glycol) tom
Constipation Rx: The general rule of toddler treatment is to provide a wetting agent like MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) & aggressively manage past stooling issues for twice the duration of the constipation or 6mo, whichever is least. A clean out of large bm followed by some watery material does not mean the work is done. The baloon like lower bowel needs time to shrink back to normal & staying as empty as possible will help that. ...Read more
