Is It Safe To Get Vitamin B12 Shots During Pregnancy
My wife was also given vitamin B12 shots for B12 deficiency (169pg/ml) during her 7th week of pregnancy. Any comments on the course of treatment.
Low B12 in early pregnancy significantly increases risk of neural tube defects, a serious birth defect. If this was my patient i'd give injections of methylcobalamin (not cyanocobalamin) 1000 mcg every day until levels come up ; test to make sure your baby was not already affected.

When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more

B12 is safe:
Any amount of b 12 is safe since excess is eliminated-but more than contained in a prenatal vitamin is wasted
some iron is advisable and again any amount is safe since only a small portion is absorbed. A practical dose for most patients is the usual prenatal vitamin once daily and one additional iron pill after a later meal. ...Read more
I'm considering a vegan diet, but I'm concerned about getting enough vitamin b12. How can I get some natural b12? I'd rather not take pills.
Red Star Yeast:
The only reliable vegan source of B12 that I know of is red star nutritional yeast vegetarian support formula (t-6635+). About 2 rounded teaspoons a day supplies adequate b12. I think it would be a lot easier to take a pill!

I have vitamin B12 defiency I get injections for life. I'm 4 foot 11. the blood reading was 160 on the B12 defiency. How bad was that reading..
Moderately low: Normal B12 levels for adults are 200-900 pg/mL. So 160 IS low. Also, many older adults will experience symptoms of deficiency even if the B12 is normal, but in low normal range. You must have been tested and learned that you lack intrinsic factor, a protein that helps the intestine absorb vitamin B12, or have other malabsorption issues, hence the need for injections. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
