Is it safe to eat sushi while pregnant.?

Is it safe to eat sushi while pregnant.?

Raw fish?: A pregnant woman "can" eat sushi, but it is safer to eat other foods instead of sushi. One reason is the mercury in fish. A person who eats more than 2 servings of fish a week may be taking in too much mercury. A second reason is that sushi often has uncooked seafood in it. Uncooked seafood can contain live viruses, bacteria, and parasites; but cooking the food usually kills those things.

Is it safe to eat non-organic foods during my pregnancy?

Is it safe to eat non-organic foods during my pregnancy?

Yes: Decreasing the amount of harmful chemicals and pesticides during pregnancy is a good idea, however some foods are not exposed to the same level of chemicals as others. Those without thick a protective outer cover are more susceptible during the growing process and therefore require more chemicals and pesticides e.g. Blueberries, strawberries. Is it safe to eat squid ink pasta/squid ink paella during pregnancy? Currently 5 months pregnant.

Yes: Yes, it is probably ok. As you probably have seen, the biggest concern with fish is that there may be high levels of mercury, which can potentially be harmful. It may be helpful to check with your local food agency because mercury levels in fish are rated, for example albacore tuna and swordfish from the Gulf of Mexico are rated at higher mercury levels. Depends on where the fish comes from.

If a person has penicillin allergy, is it safe to eat roquefort, blue, or gorgonzola cheese? Does the mold in the cheese make penicillin?

Great question: Reactions to penicillin in foods eaten by persons allergic to penicillin are rare - perhaps 10 cases in past 25 years worldwide. Cases involve eating meat from an animal given penicillin before slaughtering. I found no cases attributed to the cheeses listed. They use a different species of the genus penicillium to add flavor. Also many persons who think they are penicillin allergic are not.

Is it safe to eat feta cheese while pregnant?

Is it safe to eat feta cheese while pregnant?

Yes: First of all the entire country of greece seems to have no problems with eating feta and having babies. The issue with soft cheeses is not the cheese per se but that soft cheese may be made from unpasteurized milk and that can be linked to listeria infection. Most cheese in america is made from pasteurized dairy including feta. In addition, listeria can grow in any spoiled food, not just dairy.
