Is It Safe To Double Outlet Right Ventricle
See below:: It's a congenital heart disease in which the aorta rises from the right ventricle (the chamber of the heart that pumps blood to the lungs), instead of from the left ventricle (the normal pumpng chamber to the body). Both the pulmonary artery (which carries oxygen-poor blood to the lungs) and aorta (which carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body) comefrom the same pumping chamber. ...Read more
Why is it that propranolol, a beta-blocker drug is given to a patient with double outlet right ventricle?
To relax the heart: Some patients with double outlet right ventricle have abnormally thick muscle bundles that block the flow of blood to the lungs when the heart contracts. When the blockage is severe the oxygen level in the body can drop to dangerous levels. Beta blockers such as Propranolol reduce the strength of the heart's contraction allowing more blood to pass to the lungs and can improve the oxygen level. ...Read more
Abnormal shunt left to right atrium suggestive small atrial septal defect can this make the shunt also go right to left if so is it dangerous?
If RA>LA pressure: Shunt flow will direct from the higher pressure chamber to the lower pressure one. This usually results in left to right shunting across an asd. Over time, as flow into RA is increased, a corresponding increase in pulmonary blood flow will lead to pulmonary hypertension. The subsequent rise in right sided pressures will lead to reverse shunting (r to l) with cyanosis (eisenmenger). ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
DORV surgery: Surgery is the main treatment where the left ventricle is connected to the aorta, and the right ventricle is connected to the main pulmonary artery for the most common type. Variations on this are done depending on the sub-type of the defects. ...Read more
Double outlet of right ventricle with transposition of great arteries medication purposes, should I be concerned?
Serious defect: Double outlet right ventricle (dorv) and transposition of the great arteries (tga) commonly exist together. This is a life-threatening combination requiring surgery, preferably in the first few weeks of life. Long-term outcomes can be good and successful surgery does not necessarily warrant any long-term medications. Imperfect outcomes can occur for many reasons. ...Read more
The left side of my heart is smaller than the right on echo surely it should be the other way round? I have no c.myopathy but abnormal septal motion
PAH*, ASD: PAH has to be ruled out. Also, ASD. Some ASD's may be overlooked as the echo findings are challenging. Specifically sinus venosus and unroofed coronary sinus. Finally, it could be ARVC, but that is seen less on echo. I would order a TEE and/or cardiac MRI. If they are negative, a right heart cath can measure the pressure on the right side of your heart. *PAH -- pulmonary arterial hypertension ...Read more
A mild dilation at left side testicular veins at 2.9mm. Is it varicoceles? Does this needs to be corrected? If left untreated does it affect fertility
With right ventricle dilatation where would your Apex beat be if it was misplaced because of the right ventricle dilatation? Left or Right side?
Left side: Left side of the chest, slightly more medial than the usual place for the Left ventricular apical impulse. Either way: why would you like to palpate right or left ventricle if you are not a professional? It is not helpful to (mis)interpret medical findings/tests when you do not have the knowledge of the "big picture", nor it is to read technical details that are not going to make you feel better. ...Read more
No: Among the bad things smoking marijuana does to the heart and lungs are the noticeable rise in heart rate and blood pressure, the increased demand for oxygen by the contracting heart muscle, followed by vasodilation (blood vessels relax and dilate) with a drop in blood pressure as smoking mj continues; the abnormal rhythms in the upper heart, and maybe abnormal ventricular (lower heart) rhythms. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Follow up/management: Your physicians will monitor your child's cardiac function and exam, regulate intake of fluids and electrolytes, and evaluate whether the oxygen and CO2 levels in the bloodstream are normal . Edema or swelling in the extremities, face, neck and other areas of the body may indicate a problem with right ventricular function. The management will also include cardiology in addition to your PICU group. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can atrial septal defects shunt left to right stay the same instead of reversing to right to left?
Depends on pressure: An atrial septal defect (ASD) is an abnormal opening in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart. Blood flow across will depend on right-left pressure differences: high-to-low. After birth, left is higher than right. But in instances of lung disease or other causes of increased right sided heart pressures (pregnancy, scuba diving), normal left-right blood flow can reverse. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
How does the pulmonary pressure get high enough in asd to make it a right to left shunt instead of the opposite if its just a small hole?
Pulmonary: Hypertension can result from years of increased pulmonary return when the pressure in the right atrium gets higher than left atrium flow direction shifts. ...Read more
Is rv hypertrophy often missed on 2d echo? Or is it usually discovered? I know right heart is hard to visualize but does it miss hypertrophy?
It depends: The right heart is usually well visualized on 2d-echo, it is just that the right ventricle has long been neglected due to attention given to the left heart. If a physician is not looking for it and the sonographer lacks familiarity with ultrasound techniques to evaluate the rv, hypertrophy can be missed. There is a push from the echo society to pay more attention to the rv. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Complex congenital: Dorv is a congenital heart disease in which the aorta rises from the right ventricle ( that pumps blood to the lungs), instead of from the left ventricle (that pumps blood to the body). Both the pulmonary artery (which carries oxygen-poor blood to the lungs) and aorta (which carries oxygen-rich blood to the body) come from the right ventricle. There is also a vsd (ventricular septal defect). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Not clear : The right to left shunt or left to right shunt is usually a congenital defect. The reasons for the defect can be varied but the left to right shunt is better to have but neither is good. The right to left shunt sends unoxygenated blood out to the body. Need to see a cardiologist with possibility of needing surgery. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
