Is It Safe To Circumcise During Summer
Is it necessary?: While we do give general anesthesia to even newborns, it is typically only done for serious issues, like congenital abnormalities. It would be unusual to use general anesthesia for a circumcision. Local infiltration and/or a penile block work very well and are tolerated very well by newborns. Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
Seldom required: In kids. Should be done if there is secondary phimosis or area of shaft skin is fused to glans, this is penile skin bridging rather than the very common penile adhesions. Needs not be done just for excess skin left behind in child's circumcision because he will grow into it & will look normal by puberty. Very common request in my practice & seldom necessary, i.e. Unnecessary cosmetic procedure. Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Depends on setting: When I do an office circumcision on a young infant boy, I give the parents the option of being in the procedure room -- some want to, others don't. When we do a circumcision on an older boy in the operating room, we don't allow the parents in there. You should ask this question of your pediatrician or obstetrician or whoever would be the usual physician to circumcise your son. Read more
Mostly very safe: Provided the surgeon, pediatrician, obstetrician or mohel is well trained and careful. I believe plastibell method, where the redundant foreskin is tied off over a small plastic ring is the safest because risk of bleeding is very slight. Interesting comment: The nerve endings that provide sensation to the skin that is removed is gone. Why would it remain? If you had an extra finger on one hand and had it removed would you want the sensation of that structure to remain? All of the nerve endings that supply the penis itself and the remaining skin remain including any "sexual" endings. Read more
I am considering becoming a pediatrician, and I am wondering if I would be required to circumcise babies during my training?
Interesting question: Overall, no penis should not cause pain during intercourse, unless it is very large and hits the cervix, or partner has some vaginal issues. Circumcised penis causes a little more friction than an uncircumcised penis which slides in and out of the foreskin, but in itself should not cause pain. Read more
