A nail poked me in the finger. It didn't bleed and the nail has never been outdoors. Will this give me tetanus? It's been 9 years since my last shot.
Won't give tetanus: Tetanus is caused by a spore found in cultivated soil. Many animals can carry the organism and spread it. Rusty nails provide a good environment for the spore to exist and a means of puncturing the skin. A clean nail, never outside, didn't break the skin and wasn't a deep puncture won't give you tetanus. You are almost due for a booster. Has booster for whooping cough as well. ...Read more

Hx venofer 2009-12. Currently ferritin 139, TIBC 343, iron 59, % sat 17. Some of same Sx retuning (hair loss, ridged nails). Should I take oral iron?
No: You are not iron deficient. See a dermatologist for diagnosis. You might have alopecia areata or another cause for your symptoms. ALSO note that iron deficiency, if very severe and prolonged, may cause thin nails which are caved in like a spoon. Not ridges. Hair loss is listed in older texts as due to low iron. But in the only rigorous study of it it was clear that iron deficiency is not a cause o ...Read more

Will I get tetanus? My kitchen knife poked me in the hand while I was cleaning meat. Had little rust on it from being in dish drainer, Never been outside
Check vaccine status:
Check your vaccine status. You probably have had your routine tetanus shots. You need to get a booster at least every ten years. If there were truly rust on the knife, I might consider getting a booster tetanus vaccine, but would be more concerned about infection from cleaning meat and then having a knife injury. Let your doctor see you.
Good luck ...Read more
I take calcium, magnesium, hair/nails/skin vitamin, iron, and fish oil vitamin. How am I supposed to feel and how to I know they are working?
Hard to know:
If you have had a deficiency of one of these vitamins or minerals, your symptoms should gradually improve- hair/nails will take a while because of slow growth.
If taking for general health, it is certainly tricky to know because the goal is to not develop a condition. So, if you don't develop a condition, is it because the supplement helped or if you wouldn't have got it anyway. Good luck! ...Read more
