Is It Possible To Get Shingles At Age 17
Shingles (Herpes Zoster) (Definition)
A painful blistering skin rash caused by the chickenpox virus (varicella zoster). Early treatment with antiviral medication (within 72 hours) lowers the risk of post-herpetic neuralgia, which is lingering skin pain after the rash disappears. ...Read more
15 months: I've seen it in a 15 mo.in the pre vaccine era. Some suggest an infection, recognized or not, during pregnancy can pass the germ to baby, who may then develop shingles at any time. It is rare, & only saw one in toddlers in almost 40 yrs of practice but it does happen. When suspected, it should be confirmed with an office visit. ...Read more
Had a bad case of chickenpox at age 20, does that make me, at age 54, more or less likely to get shingles?
Can I get shingles if I come in contact with a person with chikenpox? Had been a chikenpox patient. AGE 21.
Had a bad case of chickenpox at age 21; am i more or less likely to get a case of shingles in later years; (more or less immunity?)
No change: Shingles is due to the same virus that causes chicken pox. The exact reason shingles comes back later in life is not known and the age chicken pox occurred should not affect when or if shingles occurs. A vaccine approved by the fda for individuals over 50(but not coveted by most insurance companies until age 60) reduces the incidence and severity of shingles and of the complications. ...Read more
I am 84 years old and fairly healthy. My doctor says I don't need to get a shingles shot. He says that they are not as effective for someone my age.
Do you agree>
Hello. I took this directly from the immunization action coalition
"is there an upper age limit for receipt of the zoster vaccine? Local providers are reluctant to give zoster vaccine to persons age 80-plus years."
"There is no upper age limit for zoster vaccine. The incidence of herpes zoster increases with age. It is known that about 50% of persons living until age 85 years will develop zoster."
I do not know why your doctor provided that advice. ...Read more
My dad got the shingles at age 30. Can I get it early to? At age 18? I've had chicken pox when I was 5. I'm 18 now
Maybe, maybe not: Shingles are a curious problem that happens when the chickenpox virus emerges from a state of hibernation and travels down a nerve root to the skin. It has been known to happen from infancy to old age and the trigger for its occurrence is not always evident. There is no reason to consider you more or less likely to have it when your parent did at a young age. ...Read more
My partner had shingles aged 10 but never had chicken pox. Our daughter has now got chicken pox could he still get chicken pox after having shingles?
If u had chicken pox in the past, can u get the chickpox vaccine to avoid recurrence? Also, can u get shingles vacine b4 age 50 if u had chickpox b4?
Can happen any time: Herpes zoster can happen to anone who's ever had chicken pox. Most of us have had chicken pox, thus most of us can get zoster. Zoster at younger ages typically can be brought on by stress or other insults to the immune system. Maybe your friend is under a lot of stress? Not sleeping enough? Have her see a doctor, she can and should be treated for her zoster. ...Read more
Not likely.: Shingles is nearly always limited to one side of the body. In a person with an abnormal immune system the disease could be disseminated. ...Read more
I am cured from chikenpox. Is it possible to get shingles if I come in contact with someone who has chikenpox again? I am 21 year old female.
Unlikely: Shingles is rarely if ever related to an exposure to cpx. The germ goes into hibernation in nerve cells along the front of your spine & may remain dormant for your lifetime. It is thought that the immunity you developed keeps it in check unless it weakens with age or condition. After age 60, a higher number of people experience spontaneous emergence of shingles.(I've seen it in toddlers) ...Read more
Is it possible to get shingles if you have not had chickenpox but have been vaccinated against it?
Yes : It is possible to get shingles in the future even after a chickenpox vaccine. ...Read more
Yes and no: Chickenpox usually precedes shingles by many years or decades. However, chicken pox can be very mild, and not diagnosed, or the illness may be forgotten. An infection with chicken pox virus, whether a classical illness with many lesions, or a few lesions, always precedes shingles. A shingles vaccine or adults over 50 or 60 years, reduces the severity and incidence of shingles. ...Read more
Is it possible to get shingles a week after it was on your eye even if you're on meds for it? I have widespread pain now.
Yes: While not impossible, you're pretty young to have shingles which is reactivated chickenpox. It also seems early to have developed post-herpetic neuralgia especially if you're taking an antiviral. Plus that pain is always isolated to the affected nerve root (dermatome) and not "widespread". Therefore, it's a good idea to go see doc who made diagnosis & treated you. Tell him/her what you've noted. ...Read more
Is it possible to get shingles if I never had chicken pox?? Or does it always have to be a reactivation of the chicken pox virus? Thanks.
Yes.: Your immunity has probably been boosted by your recent outbreak and you may be protected from another outbreak for a period, but no one knows for sure how long that might be. ...Read more
Please explain if it is possible to get shingles twice, having had it an eye? May I take the new vaccine for this?
Herpes zoster: Shingles, also called herpes or varicella zoster, occurs when the v. Zoster virus is reactivated after being dormant within nerve roots since a previous episode of chickenpox. Shingles occurs mainly in people over age 50 and in people with immunosuppressed states that allow the virus to "wake up". ...Read more
