Shingles (Herpes Zoster) (Definition)

Can a baby really get shingles? What's the youngest age you've heard about?

15 months: I've seen it in a 15 mo. In the pre vaccine era. Some suggest an infection, recognized or not, during pregnancy can pass the germ to baby, who may then develop shingles at any time. It is rare, & only saw one in toddlers in almost 40 yrs of practice but it does happen. When suspected, it should be confirmed with an office visit.

Had a bad case of chickenpox at age 20, does that make me, at age 54, more or less likely to get shingles?

Neither more or less: The only chickenpox age that raises the risk is very young, 50%. http://umm. Edu/health/medical/reports/articles/shingles-and-chickenpox-varicellazoster-virus Take care of yourself, but do relax about this concern. Your risk is not elevated. Be well!

No: If you had chickenpox or varicella, you are immune. The chickenpox virus lives in the dorsal horn of our spinal columns and may present as shingles. These lesions carry the chicken pox virus and are contagious to those who have not had chickenpox. All the best.

Had a bad case of chickenpox at age 21; am I more or less likely to get a case of shingles in later years; (more or less immunity?)

No change: Shingles is due to the same virus that causes chicken pox. The exact reason shingles comes back later in life is not known and the age chicken pox occurred should not affect when or if shingles occurs. A vaccine approved by the fda for individuals over 50 (but not coveted by most insurance companies until age 60) reduces the incidence and severity of shingles and of the complications.

Hello.: Hello. I took this directly from the immunization action coalition "is there an upper age limit for receipt of the zoster vaccine? Local providers are reluctant to give zoster vaccine to persons age 80-plus years." "there is no upper age limit for zoster vaccine. The incidence of herpes zoster increases with age. It is known that about 50% of persons living until age 85 years will develop zoster." I do not know why your doctor provided that advice.

Maybe, maybe not: Shingles are a curious problem that happens when the chickenpox virus emerges from a state of hibernation and travels down a nerve root to the skin. It has been known to happen from infancy to old age and the trigger for its occurrence is not always evident. There is no reason to consider you more or less likely to have it when your parent did at a young age.

My friend is only 22. Is it normal for her to get. Herpes zoster in that age?

Can happen any time: Herpes zoster can happen to anone who's ever had chicken pox. Most of us have had chicken pox, thus most of us can get zoster. Zoster at younger ages typically can be brought on by stress or other insults to the immune system. Maybe your friend is under a lot of stress? Not sleeping enough? Have her see a doctor, she can and should be treated for her zoster.

I am cured from chikenpox. Is it possible to get shingles if I come in contact with someone who has chikenpox again? I am 21 year old female.

Not Likely: After you have gotten over a case of chickenpox (varicella), this is followed by the establishment of a latent infection. The virus basically hangs out in our body for year with no symptoms until it reactivates or become shingles. Shingles usually develop when our immune system takes a hit. This can be related to old age or other diseases that affect our immune system. No worries if young/healthy
