Possible: Anything is possible. Typically birth control methods such as the patch make periods lighter with less cramping. Consider monitoring for a few months and see how it goes. If you do not get good result over time then you can consider another option

Take a test: If you think you might be pregnant check then check a home pregnancy test. They are cheap, reliable and available at any pharmacy. If negative then see a doctor to discuss irregular menstrual cycles. If you are trying to get pregnant ovulation testing may need to be done.

Otc Rx for cramps: There is a great medication available otc for menstrual cramps--ibuprofen. Take 4 of the 200 mg tablets as soon as you can after feeling any cramps. Repeat every 6-8 hours as necessary.

See GYN: Prior to your visit to the GYN specialist, start on healthy diet and regular exercise and make it part of your daily routine. Reduce sugar laden foods, avoid chocolate and drink water instead of soda. Your GYN may be able to place you on medications that will help. Goodluck
