Is It Possible Spine Fusion Break Down
Surgery to cause two or more spine segments to be joined together through a growth of bone initiated by the placement of bone tissue or graft taken from the patient or from a donor source or even a manufactured source which could include: bone growth proteins and particulate structures that act as scaffolds for bone to grow on and may include implants or instrumentation ...Read more
I have had a spinal fusion for the past 10 years. Can bending down too much or twisting cause the rod to break/fracture the spine?
Unlikely after 10yrs: The rods are there to stabilize the fused spine until the bony fusion takes. As soon as the fusion takes, there is very little stress on the rods with bending motion. Stress is transferred and concentrated in the level above and/or below the fused segments. If your fusion didn't take, then there will be repeated torque/mechanical loading cycles on the implants, which can lead to fatigue fracture. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Nerve pain: Sounds like nerve irritation from the posterior rami. This probably is due to nerve injury prior to the fusion and the increased inflammation may have exacerbated the symptoms. I'd talk with your spine surgeon, you may need either Neurontin or Lyrica to calm it down. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Had a spinal fusion about 7 years ago I now have a very painful lump on the top of the scar and when u rub your finger down the spine it feels ridget?
This could be just a: Simple cyst in the soft tissue to a possible sign of adjacent level or segment disease of the spine which can occur after a fusion leading to an instability. Sometimes a suture that is non absorbable can work its way up to near the skin surface as well. See your physician or your surgeon . ...Read more
I had l5-s1 spine fusion and a L4 foraminotomy in several months ago, is there a way to relieve back pain radiating down my left leg?
Bowling: Given the physical requirements for bowling such as trunk flexion and swinging of a heavy object in one arm, your fusion should be fairly well healed before return to this activity. Lumbar fusions generally require 3 months for early signs of fusion that are needed for return to normal activity. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Fusion confusion: There are many reasons a spine fusion can be recommended. For back pain, a fusion should only be considered as a last resort after all other options (PT, injections: facet joint, sacroiliac joint) have been performed and no relief has been achieved. If you have slippage of a vertebrae (spondylolisthesis) or have fractured a vertebrae and the spine is unstable then fusion may be the best option. ...Read more
After playing piano!: Gradual return to activities will begin within several weeks of surgery but any flexion/ rotation or twisting activities are after a solid fusion has been demonstrated and you have been through rehabilitation . The timing is also dependent on the number of levels fused, which area of the spine was fused & how the surgery was done. For this activity easily over 6 months and usually at one year. ...Read more
Depends, but not: Normally. If you have instability, then yes. However, if it is just to treat pain, you will most likely just trade the pain for another level. Only do it if you have tried all other medications and therapies. ...Read more
A fusion gets rid of a joint or disk between to bones, getting the bones to join together with bone between them. If successful, it eliminates almost all the motion between the bones. Sometimes fusion simply occur as a result of disease, rarely from aging. Most of the time ...Read more
