Is it okay for me to give my newborn breast milk and formula?

Is it okay for me to give my newborn breast milk and formula?

Yes: Many physician organizations have endorsed the idea that exclusive breastfeeding is the best for baby and mom for the first year after birth. But, it is more than ok to supplement with formula when you chose to. While we encourage breastfeeding, one should never feel bad or guilty for supplementing or switching to formula feedings. ...Read more

Which is better breast milk or formula when newborn isn't pooping?

Which is better breast milk or formula when newborn isn't pooping?

Breast milk: First i would consult with your pediatrician immediately if your newborn has never stooled as this may involve more than diet. Breast milk is digested more easily and breastfeeding babies tend to have looser stools. However, if your newborn poops but you feel he/she is constipated, i usually reassure parents that all babies have different stooling patterns. ...Read more

Milk changes: Is your baby vomiting or spitting. If she is vomiting i would be concerned about an intestinal obstruction such aspyloric stenosis, especially if she is a month old. Changing formula frequently may mean your child is getting too much milk, or getting it too rapidly. Then again, your baby may be lactose intolerant. ...Read more

I can't breast feed my newborn baby. Is there a way to give him all the antibodies breast milk contains? Is it safe to buy breastmilk?

Not reproducible: Modern science has been unable to re-create human breast milk. If pumping your own breast milk and bottle feeding it is not an option, choosing an infant formula will still give your baby proper nutrition for growth and development. Many infant formulas now have probiotics, felt to be beneficial for the digestive tract. Buying breast milk is a personal decision, but know your source. ...Read more

When can we give foods other than breast milk to our new born baby?

When can we give foods other than breast milk to our new born baby?

Wait until sitting: Breast milk or formula can provide all the needed nutrition for the first year. However, we have an expectation that kids will begin sitting at the table at a year & experiencing the culture of communal feeding.Introduction of solids is thus more cultural in timing than need. Waiting until 6 mo allows them to be sitting & a participant in the meal, rather than a passive victim of the process. ...Read more

Is it possible for my newborn to be allergic/sensitive to my breast milk?

Things in your milk: Infant allergy to cow's milk, egg, wheat, & soy present in minute amounts in breast milk is well-described. Food protein induced enterocolitis is much more common in exclusively breast than formula-fed infants. Presence of foreign proteins in breast milk is normal & not a result of our polluted age. In 1929, donnally reported that most pregnant women absorb whole egg from their digestive tracts. ...Read more

My newborn has not pooped since I switch to breast milk what should I do?

My newborn has not pooped since I switch to breast milk what should I do?

Probably OK: Breast milk is better digested than formula. At 3-4 wks of age breast fed babies may have a decrease in frequency of poops to every few days. Switching between breast and bottle can contribute to variation in frequency and character of poop. If your baby is eating well, belly is soft, and s/he is not fussy/irritable/crying more than usual it's probably fine. If you are worried, see your doctor. ...Read more
