Could I take prednisone to help heal from back surgery?

Could I take prednisone to help heal from back surgery?

Depends: Steroids, such as prednisone, can be prescribed when back surgery is performed. The most common usage is to minimize nerve pain from swelling, but also to assist in nerve recovery in situations with severe pre-op and/or post-op weakness. If prescribed, it is usually for short-term usage. With long-term use, Prednisone may slow wound healing, raise blood sugars, and delay fusion maturation. ...Read more

Prednisone (Definition)

Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more

Can I take prednisone before my hysterectomy scheduled in four days...? I will only be taking 2, 10 mg prednisone tabs 2 days prior to surgery

HUH???: It says you are male. Males do not have a uterus. Are you transgender? IMPERATIVE that you see the anesthesia and surgical teams immediately. You foolishly omitted the reason for prednisone or the duration of use. You probably have adrenal suppression and need hydrocortisone during and after surgery. ...Read more

Can I be on prednisone while having surgery?

Can I be on prednisone while having surgery?

It depends: It is not ideal in terms of healing likelihood and speed or infection risk, but sometimes is necessary due to complicating medical conditions. Be sure your surgeon is aware of your other dr's recommendation regarding steroid therapy before surgery date so there is time to address this issue. ...Read more

If I was prescribed 40mg of prednisone for 1week and have abdominal surgery in late March, will that effect surgery?

No: Your body will have excreted any remnants of the prednisone within days and any bodily effects will have normalized within a couple of weeks. You should be good-to-go for surgery. Good Luck! ...Read more

Prednisone 5 years. Aiha;splenectomy recommended/rituxan did not work/worried about susceptibility to infection/wound healing if surgery/suggestions?

Vitamin A: You are taking Prednisone and have concerns about wound healing. There are always concerns when a condition requires immunosuppression but vitamin a can help. Your surgeon will use extra precautions also like using staples and keeping them in place longer. ...Read more

Blocked eustachians for a month after sinus surgery. No pain but won't clear ever. I fly for a living. Ent says eardrum healthy. On prednisone. Help?!

Plugged ears: If you have allergies treating them may help. Topical nasal steroids may offer some benefit as well. If no improvement in the next 6-8 weeks I would see your ENT doc. They may discuss the role of tubes. ...Read more

Does prednisone prevent the body from healing after surgery? If so how long after the medication before I can have surgery? Breast augmentation

Does prednisone prevent the body from healing after surgery? If so how long after the medication before I can have surgery? Breast augmentation

Interesting: prednisone can delay wound healing and can lower resistance to infection. I would wait a few weeks before having cosmetic surgery which implants a breast prosthesis. some docs rinse out the spce that the implant is going into using prednisone and antibiotics in the hopes of reducing scarring and infection, but it is not proven to be of value. ...Read more

When will a doctor suggest looking into surgery for sciatia pain? Have been on prednisone and hydrocodone off and on since january of this year for sciatia pain. Painkillers and steroids are not working this time around and have been taking the prednisone

When will a doctor suggest looking into surgery for sciatia pain? Have been on prednisone and hydrocodone off and on since january of this year for sciatia pain. Painkillers and steroids are not working this time around and have been taking the prednisone

Given Your Pain: I would suggest seeing a pain/spine specialist to evaluate you further to evaluate what level and what can be done to treat you. There are interventional treatments besides medications and surgeries that might reduce or eliminate the pain altogether. If you've already done this then maybe surgery is the right option for you. ...Read more

I've had glue ear for a month since sinus surgery. Eust tubes feel glued shut all the time. As a commercial pilot, I can't get them to clear. Ent has tried prednisone, now he's on vacation. Advice?!

I've had glue ear for a month since sinus surgery. Eust tubes feel glued shut all the time. As a commercial pilot, I can't get them to clear. Ent has tried prednisone, now he's on vacation. Advice?!

Higher dose: Did the Prednisone work initially? If it did he may need a higher dose for a longer period of time. There could be a strong allergy component here too so over-the-counter nonsedating meds like Allegra (fexofenadine) may also be helpful. However before attempting any of this please run this by your general internal medicine doctor or your ENT doctor, please. This is just a suggestion but not medical advice. ...Read more

Seven months after cataract surgery on my right eye, I developed CME. I have been using Prednisone and Bromday twice a day. I also had a Kenalog injection a week ago, although colors are more vivid in one eye. Treatment of Cystoid Macula Edema?

Seven months after cataract surgery on my right eye, I developed CME. I have been using Prednisone and Bromday twice a day. I also had a Kenalog injection a week ago, although colors are more vivid in one eye. Treatment of Cystoid Macula Edema?

Consider this: Cme developing 7 months after cataract surgery is so unusual, I question the diagnosis. There are many possible causes of swelling the macula. For example, there could be vitreomacular adhesion causing macular edema. ...Read more

Have sinus infection since January after many antibiotics/prednisone. What non-invasive options might an ENT offer? Afraid they'll want to do surgery!

Have sinus infection since January after many antibiotics/prednisone. What non-invasive options might an ENT offer? Afraid they'll want to do surgery!

Maybe not that bad: You need a CT scan of sinuses to confirm diagnosis. Seek an ENT for nasal endoscopy in office and rule out other possible cause of symptoms like gastric reflux disease. If surgery is needed, newer therapies in office like balloon opening of sinuses and stent placements are revolutionizing old traumatic FESS sinus surgery. ...Read more

I'm taking prednisone eye drops cause I had lasik eye surgery. Is that going to mix bad with Advil (ibuprofen) I am taking for my knee taking from a recent injury?

No problem: There is trivial absorption of the topically applied prednisolone drops into the systemic circulation. So there will be no mixture or interaction and you can treat each condition separately as prescribed. ...Read more

Yes: The conditions that you described are still present, just being minimized by the steroid/antibiotic combination. The underlying problem still exists. The medications that you are taking will decrease the risks of an infection delaying operation, but you should not be on them long-term. Any questions you should contact your ENT surgeon. Good luck. ...Read more
