My infant won't make a bowl movement unless I stick a thermometer in her rectum and move it around. Is this normal? How do I get her to go on her own?

My infant won't make a bowl movement unless I stick a thermometer in her rectum and move it around. Is this normal? How do I get her to go on her own?

Bowel Movements: She will go on her own when she is ready to go. The biggest mistake we as parents make is thinking our babies have to go everyday. If you keep stimulating her with the thermometer, she will get to the point she will only go when she has that stimulus. So stop doing that. Some babies go multiple times a day, some go everyday, some go once a week. Adults do that too. Be patient. ...Read more

Given butter contains trans fat and cholesterol (good for myelin though), is it advisable to include (10g/day) in 1.5yo normal-weighing infant's diet?

Given butter contains trans fat and cholesterol (good for myelin though), is it advisable to include (10g/day) in 1.5yo normal-weighing infant's diet?

Yes: Butter contains a small amount of trans fat in the form of conjugated linoleic acid, which is good for you! not all trans fats are bad! cholesterol in butter does not significantly raise our cholesterol levels and cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease. No need to avoid butter, but far better if organic esp. From grass-fed cows. See my comment for some interesting links. ...Read more

Pain isn't normal: It is common for some breast fed babies to have a bowel movement with each feeding (sometimes, just small squirts). As long as it is soft, not hard balls, it is usually normal. I changed the formula on my 3month old from enfamil infant to enfamil a.R he passes stools 5 times a day now: yellow thicker w/ mucus is that normal?

Yes: The difference between the two formulas is that the ar contains a rice starch to "thicken" the formula a bit so that the baby doesn't spit up as much. This can increase fiber content in the stool, making the stools a bit thicker. 5 poops a day for a 3 month old is totally normal. Babies poop a lot! ...Read more
